Meet Alex Kupczyk

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Kupczyk.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Both of my parents were animators in the golden age of 2d feature animation, and so I grew up in that kind of artistic environment. I wanted very much to follow in their footsteps, so I pushed myself into an art high school called LACHSA. I had a beautiful, intense, and impactful start to my own artistic practice where I realized that painting, more than animation, was where my heart lied. After High school, I tried out a fine art undergraduate program at the SMFA, which turned out to not be what I was looking for. I continued to make work for a couple of years before returning to school at the ArtCenter College of Design. In the Illustration undergraduate program, I have seen myself take my work to the next level over and over again. I am beyond thrilled to be graduating from such an esteemed program at the end of this year. (2020)

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I developed an allergy to oil paint in 2019. Technically it is referred to as a chemical sensitivity, but explaining it as an allergy is the best way to understand it. Many of the materials involved in oil painting are actually very dangerous, and Ironically I am sensitive to the drying oils, which are the safest part. I’ve had to clean up my practice, but more dramatically, I’ve had to start wearing a respirator while painting. It adds to the cost and makes the process more difficult. Oil Painting has always been the most rewarding medium of art production for me and I couldn’t stop if I tried.

Please tell us more about your art.
I am first and foremost an artist. I love all kinds of artistic production. I will never shake my love for oil paint, but over the years I have developed skills in other mediums such as watercolor, ink and pixels. I want to have a rich career filled with different kinds of jobs, from freelance illustration to in-house design work, in addition to a gallery practice.
