Today we’d like to introduce you to Simon Kuang.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Simon. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I came across Chiropractic Care while I was competing in the sport known as Olympic Weightlifting. I’ve been a strength athlete for as long as I can remember. Lifting heavy weights was a way of life for me, and did so while throwing caution to the wind. This was until one fateful Saturday evening inside the weight room at 24 hour fitness. I remember this day like it was yesterday. I was young dumb, and without adult supervision. I stepped up to a barbell loaded with four hundred and 35 pounds on it. I was thinking that I was going to lift this weight even if it was going to kill me, and it almost did. Halfway through the lift I heard 2 snaps come from my low back, I dropped to me knees before the weights made it back onto the floor. I was in so much pain I vomited on the way to the emergency room. I was prescribed a typical pharmaceutical cocktail that consisted of pain relievers, anti-inflammatory medications and a muscle relaxer; which did nothing for me. I couldn’t get out of bed in the morning without first rolling around for ½ an hour, I couldn’t sit for longer than 5 minutes at a time, and there would be times that I had to pull over while driving to walk off the pain. I felt hopeless, and thought that my career as a weightlifter was over. But then I got my first chiropractic treatment. Within my first visit, all the pain that the medications failed to help with was reduced by 80%. And that was it, I was sold. I started school to become a chiropractor a month later, and here stand before you 10 years later with my own sports chiropractic practice in downtown Fullerton.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road that I traveled down was not without its challenges. I’ve made many marketing mistakes, wasted a lot a money on advertising campaigns that lead nowhere, and let some worthwhile opportunities slip through my fingertips. But one key struggle that really forced me to overcome adversity was when I suffered a career threatening injury, I dislocated my shoulder on March 8th 2014 during a weightlifting competition. Without going into too much detail, I caught a 250lb weight overhead in an awkward position and heard my right shoulder dislocate. It sounded like a baseball bat hitting a baseball. I had torn my rotator cuff, and 2 ligaments that were responsible for 90% of the joint integrity. What followed was my early retirement from a being a competitive weightlifter, a long hiatus from being a chiropractor, and a recovery that involved surgery, a bout of deep depression, and 18 months of physical therapy. It’s also worthy to note that my therapist recommended that I get a therapy dog. I followed that advice, and my 3 year old chocolate lab, named kilo, follows me to work and is my door greeter at my clinic.
Ideal Body Chiropractic – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Firstly, my treatment goal is to relieve pain, then give my patients the tools necessary to stay that way.
As a chiropractor, I specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal issues. All of my new patients receive a thorough physical and neurological examination where I put them through a series of tests to determine the nature of your condition. If their condition is in fact a musculoskeletal condition, we will then move on to treatment.
My treatments consist of Chiropractic adjustments to the joints of the body. This includes the joints of the low back, tail bone, spine, shoulder, hip, knee, etc. If it’s a joint and is not working properly, I can take care of it.
Another service I offer is called active release technique deep tissue massage, or ART for short. ART is known as the gold standard in the treatment of soft tissue abnormalities. If you have a strained muscle, a sprained ligament, etc, active release technique is the most efficient and effective way to get the results my patients need.
In addition to the services that get my patients out of pain, I offer movement therapy to help them stay out of pain. This is similar to physical therapy where I give you exercises, stretches and other things my patients can do on their own time to get them to stay pain free for longer.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment for me was when I first got the keys to my office and walked into it for the first time. The electricity hadn’t been turned on yet, and only the light was from what came in through the windows. The office was empty and quiet, but what filled that silence were thoughts of what I had accomplished, and what was to come. Thoughts of my mom and how she poured her life savings into my office to help me with the down payment to open it up. I thought about the countless cans of energy drinks that would keep me awake during my late night study sessions. I thought of how much my shoulder would hurt while I was putting myself through physical therapy to recover from my dislocation. I was also flooded of thoughts of what was to come, the opportunity I had before me to help countless patients move better and live better. I took it all in during that one moment.
