Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Cowan.
Courtney, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always loved baking, and specifically baking cookies. When we were kids, my sister and I would make cookies all the time (mainly to eat the dough, if I’m being honest), and when I was in my teens, I came up with my own recipe. As I perfected it over time, it became very popular with friends, family, and eventually co-workers. After several instances of people mistaking them for “bakery” cookies, I realized I might have created something special. In 2005, I began experimenting with a variety of flavors and started an online business. I loved the thought that, with each of the deliveries I made, someone’s day got a little bit brighter, and the end goal quickly became to go brick & mortar. I wanted a shop where I could host these people and provide a place to enjoy a cookie and a glass of milk. In 2012, I decided to take the leap, and Milk Jar Cookies opened its doors in April 2013!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Overall, I am extremely grateful for how smooth it has been. However, as with all things worth doing, it has not come without its challenges. There are the daily struggles of keeping everything moving forward and balancing the growth, and there are bigger challenges like your mixer going down in the midst of preparing a large order. No matter what has come my way, I’ve learned to take it in stride, and that if you are creative enough, there’s a solution for everything.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Milk Jar Cookies – what should we know?
At Milk Jar Cookies, we like to keep it simple. We bake homemade cookies and pair them with locally-sourced milk, ice cream, and coffee. Our cookies are homemade daily & baked in small batches from morning till night, so you can be assured something will always be fresh out of the oven when you visit. We also deliver and ship our cookies, packing them with lots of love to ensure they stay delicious from our oven to your doorstep.
Some exciting news to share is that Williams Sonoma has created a line of cookie mixes based on our cookies! Now available in stores nationwide and on their website, we are giddy with excitement at this partnership.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I have an incredibly supportive and talented husband, Adam Tiller, who is responsible for the branding of Milk Jar Cookies. He took a hiatus from his job as a television Editor to help me get the company off the ground and continues to moonlight at the shop, despite working a full time job. To say he is an integral part of Milk Jar is an understatement.
