Meet Mark Goldberg

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Goldberg.

Mark, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I went to film school at UCLA, graduated in 1980 and got a job later that year assistant editing on after school specials. I was at that company five years, cut a feature film, and then got into other genres, documentary, informational, trailers and tv spots, and then reality. I did take 11 years off starting in 1992 to paint and was a full-time artist, with gallery shows, art reps, collectors, etc. Now I paint between editing projects.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Being an independent contractor is difficult, lining up jobs all the time… also have encountered a lot of roadblocks due to being gay in my younger years and ageism in recent years.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
Being an editor, I strive to be fast and easy to work with… I think those are very important qualities. I can do effects and all, but I am an off-line editor and work on shows that require storytelling skills.

As a painter, my artwork is what I call IMPRESSIONISTIC REALISM, I strive to depict light and shadow with warm cold colors. I am known mostly for my botanical work.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
To tell you the truth, I haven’t had any mentors. I have had family members that were very high up in the editing world, and I was an award-winning film school graduate, but every job I got was just hard work. If anything, a good friend has referred me to some good jobs; and we both cut primarily reality.

In the art world, I find that people will only buy your work if they like it; regardless of if they know you or not.
