Meet Gideon Sawyer of GHS Designs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gideon Sawyer.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Well, I’ve always loved thrifting so upcycling came naturally out of that. I wanted to spread my love of unique pieces with a past life, not to mention the benefits that buying used clothing has on the environment. I think that was the real fuel for me; I always thought if I could get someone to buy a used piece of clothing from me, that’s one less new item.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Definitely not. There are constantly new problems arising. When you do something like this by yourself, you realize how many jobs there are in running a clothing company or any company, I would guess. With that being said, I want to shout out Barefoot Doyen. They’ve made my life so much easier in handling anything I need help with really. They got my website together for me, labels, all the behind the scenes stuff is them to be honest.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with GHS Designs – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I upcycle used clothing. I do everything from paint, to sew, to screen print, to airbrush; I enjoy mixing materials a lot. I think it adds to the idea that when you buy GHS, you’re not buying clothing, you’re buying wearable art. I think my proudest moments are constantly happening. What I mean by that is the thrill I get from a person telling me their friend recommended me. The feeling that someone was happy enough with my work that they recommended another friend to come to me will never be beaten. I think what sets me apart is that I’m never doing the same thing. I lose interest if I do the same thing, so you can always expect something new from me. You might not like it, but I doubt you’ve seen it.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I hope to just maintain my love of fabrics. If I had the opportunity to scale the business once I graduate, I would jump at the opportunity, but I also really want to travel. I’m kind of going with the flow right now. School takes up most of my time so I have much less free time than I did even a month ago, but I still find time to paint. That’s my main goal; make time to create.
