John Schwarz and Jackson Defa started a coffee company in the historic Boyle Heights neighborhood of LA in 2017. Met by controversial pushback from an organization claiming to be anti-gentrification, Weird Wave Coffee quickly rose to the forefront of coffee culture in LA. After scrutinization, the pushback was revealed to be from outside groups (often paid by large corporations) and not actually an indictment from the local neighborhood community. After the controversy quelled, a local watering hole, replete with great coffee and homemade-style breads and pastries was born!
Has it been a smooth road?
Swirling with initial controversy, Weird Wave Coffee sought to bring community together in a neighborhood that largely didn’t have a strong local thread. That’s what coffee shops are for, after all, and that’s precisely what Weird Wave Coffee has done. We provide an atmosphere for all types; creed, religion, race, income, sexual preference… all are welcome!

Weird Wave coffee was founded by business partners who have combined over two decades of experience in the coffee and specialty food/hospitality industry. We sought to use this experience as a guide to bring the highest quality coffee and farm-style light cuisine to our community in beautiful Boyle Heights. We specialize in house-made breads and various pastries. We make all our own jams and sauces from scratch. We are known for our custom sandwiches, creative toasts as well as our fine coffee beverages.

Los Angeles is truly a blessed place. The weather is perfect. The people are open-minded, curious and hard-working. We have beaches, mountains and forests all around us. What’s not to love!
