Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney and Eric Payton.
Courtney and Eric, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
We’re a young married couple who met five years ago on Instagram. We dated briefly, fell in love, got engaged and married within a three years span. Not the average millennials, we knew what we wanted and the life we aspired to build together. We both have similar upbringings but different stories and that’s what makes us unique. Myself, (Courtney) comes from a young mother who had me at the age of 16. My mom managed to raise my little sisters and I while also acquiring her Master’s degree. She always emphasized the importance of education and made sure that it was the forefront of our home. Eric was also raised by a young mother from the age of three and on after his father was murdered in 1998 due to police brutality. We both grew up watching our mothers sacrifice and build the best life they could for us as single parents.
As young adults, we are both self-taught individuals who studied how to build our credit, build wealth, save and manage our finances with financial independence being the ultimate goal. Breaking generational curses is what we wanted to do for not only ourselves but for our future family. Teen pregnancy, divorce, poverty and single parent households is not the lifestyle we want our children to experience. With God as the foundation of our marriage and home, we managed to overcome a few of these curses. We’ve made a vow to each other to provide our future children with more than what we had growing up. With this mindset is how we launched Munch N Sip Vending Services to create another stream of income. This is the reason why we grind so hard so that we never have to go without. We are starving our now to feed our future.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Life has definitely not always been a smooth road. We are human beings and nowhere near perfect. We struggle daily with trying to build wealth and make wise decisions. Not having our fathers in the picture to help us navigate through life is a bittersweet feeling. With my father being deceased, I have to navigate life as a man and husband and one day becoming a father without him. Growing up in a single-parent household full of women, I had to figure out fast how to become my own man as well as living life and enjoying my childhood. I had to pick and choose certain advice given to me from men in my family and some of my friend’s fathers because not all advice is good advice. I really want to take a moment to acknowledge one man in particular, named Trevor Graham. He really showed me the true definition of what a man is and taught me how to make my own money.
Getting married young has been a challenge because it’s not normalized in our generation. Marriage is a commitment and we work hard to become better everyday. An obstacle that I, Courtney, currently face is trying to finish my pre-requisites to apply to dental hygiene school. As a new wife, balancing a full-time school schedule, working as a part-time Registered dental assistant, managing a business and running an entire household can be extremely overwhelming at times. With the support of my husband Eric, he provides me with the financial, emotional and physical support that allows me to accomplish my personal goals. He’s always in my corner to help me with anything that I need. He pushes me to become a better woman and for that, I’m determined we will build the best life possible.

Being able to make a difference in our community by giving back, which can potentially change the world. Success is achieving the goals and plans that are set ahead of us.
