Today we’d like to introduce you to Barbara Moscoso.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Barbara. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am originally from a country at the opposite end of America, Chile. I have been living in the US for the past six years working as a professional dancer, first in Miami and now more than four years in Los Angeles. I started dancing relatively late, at age 14, but then went on to study Dance and Choreography at the Chilean University of Arts and Communications. There in my home country, I danced on various TV programs, including winning two seasons of a program similar to Dancing With The Stars, “Fiebre de Baile”. I also worked with companies such as Coca-Cola, Walmart and BCI training corporate executives in teamwork through dance.
Just as much as I love working with professional dancers, I thrive interacting with those who are lovers or dance but do not necessarily dedicate their lives to it. But if you were to ask me what I most enjoy as a dancer, I would have to admit that it is dancing on awards stages and touring with artists such as Maluma, with whom I am dancing as part of his “11:11 World Tour”.
That is how, performing on tours with artists, getting to know other countries, seeing other cultures/colors/cuisine, meeting women from other walks of life who would ask about how I was dressed, I decided to take on a new challenge, creating my own clothing line. When I was a little girl, my family owned a clothing line in Chile. Growing up around sewing machines and rolls of material, I think the idea of my own fashion line was always in the back of my mind; with my travels as a dancer, however, I could no longer deny the idea.
Barbs, clothing line and boutique, is inspired in versatile women, women of shared and varying experiences, strong women with a desire to accept challenges, women who evolve, women who empower other women. I feel that my mission in life is to empower what is inside each women, all different but with beautiful minds who, whether through dance or even an outfit, feel themselves shine.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As my grandparents had a clothing line as well, when I started Barbs, I understood a little of the textile side of owning a clothing business. The struggles that we have encountered along the way, however, have been 21st-century issues of operating an online business, maintaining a social media presence, and connecting with clients on the daily but virtually. E-commerce has allowed for ideas to flourish and has lowered the bar for entry into clothing sales, but this has also greatly increased competition. For a brand to succeed, they must find a niche to stand out among the rest. Our goal with Barbs has always been to connect directly with our clients so that they feel part of the family and like they have some control over creative decisions and the direction of the brand. Also, because I am a professional dancer, Barbs understands that today’s woman must dress in a versatile but fashionable way that allows for freedom of movement and expression.
We’d love to hear more about your business.

What were you like growing up?
As a little girl, I was always creating. Whether it was “shows” for my family, making my own costumes, or directing my whole school in dance numbers, I was always interested motivating others to join me in my own creative world. From a very young age, I knew that I needed to bring to life the ideas that lowed through my mind. When I started college, I tried following the plan that others had for my life, studying industrial engineering. But after only a month, I knew that my passion lies in creative arts and changed course to study dance and choreography.
