Meet Xavier Lam of Niche Agency

Today we’d like to introduce you to Xavier Lam.

Xavier, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
It all started in 2012, junior year at Chandler High School. My parents didn’t really have much coming from Hong Kong, China. I found my way into the world of affiliate marketing at a company named Karmaloop located in Boston, Massachusetts. During the time I didn’t have a car to get around so I got lucky and found this online affiliate marketing job while shopping, someone reached out to use their rep code for a discount and got me intrigued of what this person was trying to do. Affiliate marketing was what sparked my interest in studying marketing at Arizona State University. While working for Karmaloop over the 4 years, I helped generate over half a $1,000,000 dollars for the company before the company had to file for Chapter 11 (bankruptcy). I learned from this event that with things going up it always must come down, the company was looking to expand and partnered with Pharrel Williams trying to start an online television channel called KarmaloopTV and due to the amount of money, they got from investors that they put into KarmaloopTV and decisions that were made it didn’t go as well as they thought.

Being the top 5 reps in the world every month I was able to build connections while working with Karmaloop with different brands and other reps around the world. I joined other companies that had affiliate marketing programs such as Creative Recreation and Mooselimited which I had also become top reps in those programs with the online presence I already had built from Karmaloop and networked myself with other companies doing small jobs such as product shots to interning. I worked with Adidas as one of the campus ambassadors helping seed products and host events throughout the semester at Arizona State University. We were able to release ASU exclusive sneakers and throw fun events on releases. With senior year approaching, I was finishing up an internship in Los Angeles during summer working for Mooselimited which was an online streetwear company as a marketing intern but with it being so small I was able to learn things from packaging cost to working with brands on buying merchandising to what the CEO does behind the day to day operations. Finishing my summer I was offered a position in the company. I decided to decline the offer and finish up my last year to obtain my marketing degree. Returning back to Arizona, I interned at a marketing agency called Envida while finishing up my last year and learned a lot more than I expected and helped open my mind a little on other areas possibly in marketing.

I realized that there were a lot of business owners not having a strong understanding of marketing for their own company so I decided to start my own marketing company and that’s when Niche Agency was born where I helped businesses understand that social media marketing isn’t an afterthought it should be the first thought. After graduating, I landed a job working with Google in the Google Ads department and now it’s been over a year being with them as well as running my marketing agency and solidifying the ground of it with the side of my photography and resell business.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Building a business is never easy. Lots of time outside of my job and late nights was spent building it. Rejection from clients being afraid of a young 20 year old trying to take over their entire marketing was a constant nightmare. I had to slowly build my portfolio working with past brands or working with single business owners I was able to show other businesses that results take time and its a normal up and down the result. Without investing and taking chances though you wouldn’t see results that are shown within 3-4 months of bringing more clients to the business owners. It was many nights of staying up till 3 am – 4 am of making sure clients were happy and everything was running smoothly, then waking up at 7 am or 8 am for meetings and having to also have a social life.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Niche Agency – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Niche Agency is a marketing company that helps business owners understand that social media isn’t an afterthought but a first thought. The number of possible leads that it’s able to reach through the internet is one of the main focus we want business owners to set. Without customers, the business is nothing which is why branding your business to the right target audience is so important. One of the proudest moments was receiving my first 4 digit monthly check from a client and still to this day go strong with and I am extremely proud because I am giving him the results he wants. I wouldn’t say we are set apart from many other market companies as we all try our best to be different in our own ways but in the end it all ties to the numbers and results we offer our clients.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
So many things are constantly running through my head of what can I do next to make this company stand out and keep the gears moving. My goal is to hire a few employees to maybe ease the workload off myself so I can focus on operations verse constantly checking on my data and numbers as well as hopefully moving into an office if the time is right if COVID19 ends. Building the business into a 6 figure income and having 10 full-time employees by 2023.
