Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie King.
Jamie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Jacksonville Native, Jamie King always had a love for the arts as a young child. Growing up in the church music was instilled before the age of four. Ministering in church functions and fellowships. Being apart of the “Ritz Voices” a community choir for kids ages 4-18, I learned so much and knew then that life on stage was my calling. After graduating High School post-secondary education was a HUGE factor. I began studying at Bethune Cookman University majoring in Business Administration while being apart of the concert chorale touring all over the US. I then was casted in the musical “Dreamgirls” and after the response from opening night, I knew that this was something I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I then found out about AMDA NY (American Musical Dramatic Academy) and continued my education majoring in musical theatre. After moving to NY, the seriousness of my career began to form. Learning ever thing I could possibly absorb to be the best performer I can be. I then booked “The Color Purple” and played Celie, wonderful experience & I learned so much about myself as an artist. The director at Alhambra Theatre in Jacksonville Fl Tod Booth came to my closing & booked me for “Elf the Musical”, and then soon after “Godspell” and “Aint Misbehavin”. From being a singer first, I tap’d in ALL areas. From dance (tap) and acting to being a triple threat. It’s exciting & I challenge myself everyday.
Has it been a smooth road?
Whew. ABSOLUTELY NOT. Being an artist comes with a lot, being in your head too much if people are genuine, are you vulnerable enough & yet you still deliver. That’s what we do. I’ve dealt with depression, anxiety, & self-doubt. Learning to embrace everyday as it comes. Learning that happiness is built from small victories and daily accomplishments, yes, like getting out of bed. Learning that life is not perfect or easy or needs to go my way. Learning that some things will fall apart and that’s okay. Learning that every experience, connection, and life event is a lesson to be learned. They’ve been some of the hardest lessons but I’ve needed it. Learning to let go. Learning to allow things to flow, not to be forced by my wants, needs & expectations. Learning that though my path has been “broken, according to societal norms” (whatever it that means) I am the creator and owner of my decisions and actions. If you don’t like some things or it no longer makes you feel alive and full of passion, you can change it. I know its easy for us to “give up” or change things if it just isn’t what we want, but trust me it took me years to move and make change so it’s not something I take lightly. But, now that I know its possible, I know that I can & will.
