Meet Ella-Jane Sharpe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ella-Jane Sharpe.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Ella-Jane. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
From a young age, I was always singing around the house. Whilst I did not grow up in a musical family (no musicians in the family) there was always music around the house – which definitely inspired me growing up. My parents decided to enroll me in piano lessons when I was six as I loved music so much, but the thing I loved most was singing. It wasn’t until I turned 12 that I began singing lessons in Australia, and I really owe it to the teachers I had growing up, as they’ve taught me so much.

I had big dreams of living in America since I was young – having traveled there a few times, it really seemed like the place for what I wanted to do. My vocal coach, Erana Clark, encouraged me to do some research into Berklee College of Music in Boston. Long story short, I auditioned for Berklee and was awarded a scholarship to attend the full-time program and earn my Bachelor’s degree.

Throughout my time at Berklee, I have produced my own shows, been featured in many of the college’s showcases, and have been working on my own music with my producer. We have more releases planned over the next few months, so I’m really excited for everyone to hear it.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely required a lot of hard work to get to this point – the work really never stops. There’s always something to think about, whether it be keeping up with a constant flow of original material, posting exciting content on your feed, networking or just researching. I spend a lot of time just researching the artists I like and finding what works for them and what their market is.

My biggest struggle would be moving away from home so young. I came to Berklee when I was 18, so moving halfway around the world at that point in my life really put things into perspective and made me realize just how big my dreams are, and just how much I’m willing to sacrifice for them. It can be really hard being away from family, but I’m really focused on achieving all my goals and getting to where I need to be.

Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I am a British-Australian R&B and Pop singer-songwriter based in Boston, Massachusetts. For the last few years, I have developed a deep love and appreciation for traditional jazz artists and a passion for modern-day Neo-Soul and R&B, which has definitely had a huge influence on my sound and artistry. My music draws inspiration from the multi-cultural environment I grew up in, my surroundings, and those who are close to my heart.

In July of this year, I released my debut single, “YOU.” and will be releasing more of my music over the coming months. We have been working really hard for a while now to get my music to a point where it accurately reflects my artistry, and I feel like we’re there. It’s been a lot of work to get here, but I honestly think it’s the only way to make your music unique to who you are.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I don’t define success as being rich or famous, I personally believe that those goals are unrealistic. For me, I am always striving to be the best musician I can be. In my career, I would love to be signed with an independent record label, write and record my own music, tour with amazing musicians, work with those who inspire me and always love what I do. To me, that is success.
