Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Marc Kayem.
Dr. Kayem, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I moved to Los Angeles in 1997 and started a new Otolaryngology (ENT) practice. Initially joining a group in Century City, then moving to Culver City in 1999. As my practice grew, I made the move to Beverly Hills in 2006, and have been there since.
My practice is split between otolaryngology (ear, nose and throat) and facial plastic surgery. I cover all aspects of my specialties but have special interests in snoring and sinus issues, as well as facial rejuvenation.
I also have developed a strong reputation as an expert witness in otolaryngology and facial plastics, and recently joined the medical expert witness team with the Medical Board of California.
Though my home office location is in Beverly Hills, I also have satellite offices in Mammoth Lakes, California, Las Vegas, Nevada, and Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Setting up a new medical practice in a city as busy as Los Angeles is no easy task, and fraught with uncertainty. Initially, I would see only 1 or 2 patients a day, and they appreciated the time I would take with them. I would also then send them a summary of their visit and my findings and would send this to their primary care doctors as well. I also have a very positive outlook on life and good communication skills. All this helped rapidly develop a good word of mouth referral, and my practice started growing gradually.
Though I no longer have time to send each patient a summary of their visit, I still take all the time needed to be complete, thorough, and with an intense interest in educating my patients about their diagnosis, in easy-to-understand terms.
We’d love to hear more about your practice.
I have always had a special interest in snoring treatments, as well as treatment of sinus problems. I also love the idea of minimally invasive options, that allow people to get back to work right away with no downtime, and less risk. I have been able to apply this to both sinus treatment and snoring, where office-based procedures now have a high rate of success, with no downtime.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I am in the process of developing a new treatment option for snoring. The ENT community has recently had a void in the office-based options for the treatment of snoring. I recently applied for a patent on a new treatment option for snoring that I hope to start testing in the next few months.
