Today we’d like to introduce you to Dulma Altan.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Dulma. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was born in Mongolia and grew up in Sacramento and lived between the two worlds for most of my childhood which significantly shaped my perspective & ambitions.
I was fortunate enough to get into Brown University where I studied International Development, wrote a thesis about social entrepreneurship, taught Vinyasa yoga and became fell in love with startups. My first job was helping small businesses with paid advertising at Google after which I freelanced as a digital marketer in Silicon Valley until starting my first business, Potion. I bootstrapped Potion, the world’s first clean fragrance retail store, for two years until realizing just how challenging & unscalable selling fragrances online was. During that time I’d started a community of women in ecommerce and realized the workshops I was organizing for this group could be turned into an educational platform for women in its own right, which led to the idea for Makelane.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s definitely been a challenge in every way—financially, psychologically, emotionally, and professionally. But it’s also been the most rewarding and meaningful thing I’ve ever worked on and all the hardship so far has been more than worth it.
Please tell us about Makelane.
Makelane is building the MasterClass for ambitious women. We create content & community to accelerate women-owned businesses starting with ecommerce. We do this by creating courses and workshops taught by world-class experts. We’re still in the early stages but so far, we’ve built a community of 900 women founders, hosted over 30 live workshops, and tested three paid masterclasses that been successful. What makes us different is our focus on community-driven learning & support, our emphasis on creating a space for women to thrive, and our dedication to actionable, industry-specific knowledge.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Playing in the pristine nature of Mongolia with my cousins during the summers. Going to the movies or museums regularly with my mom in Sacramento.
