Today we’d like to introduce you to Anmol Narula.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Anmol. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
The idea was originally initiated by a question I got from a friend: What would a post fast-fashion world look like? Can we move beyond the cheap knock offs consumers have become accustomed to & can we provide something different, new? The fashion industry is extremely fast moving. Weaving its way through the world as an unstoppable cultural force- touching everything.
Starting any business, especially in fashion, is never a small feat. I spent much of my career working in international business & startups. However, fashion was never far off from my mind as something I wanted to pursue. So, I set out in search of a startup idea. Specifically, with the focus of challenging industry norms. The intent was to create a space where designers would have a platform to create virtually unchallenged. It took some trial & error, but we landed on a brand that really reflects the values we were going for in the beginning.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Fashion is a highly competitive industry with lots of big players. Large corporate fashion houses nurture a patriarchal legacy of “winner takes all”. This naturally drowns out individual voices & makes it very challenging for small companies to make a substantial mark. As a small young company, we have been experimenting from the get-go, and consistently shifting our marketing and design strategy. We have to be nimble because we do not have the liberty of working with huge budgets or years of legacy.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with NISM – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
NISM is the fashion house of the future. Instead of enlisting designers to tell its story – often disappearing in the shadows. NISM uses its platform for elevate each designer unique voice. These take shape in limited-edition capsule collections. Several collections will be dropped throughout the year – each with its own unique attitude, from a handpicked, break out designer.
We are foremost known for creating Quality & Original Designs. As well as an entry-level price point that is far better than a lot of established competition, whilst giving the real creators a platform.
Our goal is to become known as a fashion destination for discovering new designers.
I created a business that requires support from creators & designers just as much as from the consumers. I am most proud of all the appreciation and love shown by creators in the industry.
What sets you apart from others/competitors? Do you have any direct Competitors?
Right now, there isn’t anyone else doing what we are doing. In a sense we have no competition, but in another we have lots. NISM isn’t a traditional fashion house, fast fashion retailer, traditional marketplace or brand accelerator. However, we mix elements of each of those models to create something new.
Do you feel like our city is a good place for businesses like yours?
Yes, due to the abundance of creators and creative energy in the city, plus the large base of fashion resources available in the city. Further, the culture that the rest of the country and the world follow often originates from Los Angeles. To put it simply, it is the culture creator capital of the world and being based in Los Angeles helps us push the NISM message forward.
What are your plans for the future?
NISM is working on our next designer collaboration. Inspired by the current movement and our brand mission to give voice to the creative ideas of those who would generally be silenced, we’re hosting an Open Call – allowing for talent to apply to partner with us to have their collection produced and sold through the NISM platform.
