Meet Felicia Baker of MusiqaSB in Inglewood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Felicia Baker.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Felicia. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started writing in a journal my mother gave me, around ten years old. I never stopped. I wrote my thoughts and feelings, songs and poetry. I believe my mother wanted to know what I was thinking.

I started writing my own songs after writing casually with friends and ghostwriting, here and there. Producer friends would say they wanted to collab and create. Most times, it wouldn’t happen. A few times it did. I recorded some songs with a producer from the bay, Poetiq Beatz. I let a few people hear a song or 2. Someone close to me took interest.

My cousin (Terance) emailed some tracks to me, he’d created, and told me that we were a band called New Dinosaurs. He was living in Atlanta at the time, and I was in Inglewood. Once he moved home to Cali, we started creating even more. We released an EP in December called Take Me Away and are currently working on something amazing.

Has it been a smooth road?
Yea, no. Definitely not a smooth road. The hardest obstacle faced, was my own fear, my own belief that I was inadequate. I can hear the insecurity in my voice when I listen to the first songs of my own, I recorded. I also had to learn (the hard way) that no one is obligated to care about or support your dreams. You HAVE TO believe in yourself. You can’t get anywhere without doing so. You seek better when you really believe in yourself and what you feel is your purpose. It was a matter of unlearning the negative labels I had been taught to believe, about myself, by society and the people around me, who’d also been brainwashed into self-hate.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
New Dinosaurs is MusiqaSB and Buggsy Capri. Me and my Bro-sin (brother/cousin) creatively expressing what we think and feel in a way you’ve never heard. What we create is honest, raw, sensitive, eclectic and sincere. My hope is that it transcends this plain. I hope you float.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
This is the best place to start if you’re in music. Everyone comes here to advance their music career. Which means you REALLY have to work/be persistent, be special, have a connect or have access to a big money resource to achieve fame/stardom if that’s your goal. Only the strong survive.
