Meet Shrimp Przybyla of Flower Shrimp in East Hollywood / Thai Town

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shrimp Przybyla.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Shrimp. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’m a queer non-binary florist living in Los Angeles and I own and operate Flower Shrimp. Flower Shrimp was started in 2018 when I found myself experimenting with a variety of cactus and succulent arrangements.

I had a few clients asking about specialty pots and this led to testing out various forms of cement pottery. I found the process of making something clean and minimal and beautiful from such a rugged and industrial material very fulfilling. After spending nine years working in retail, transitioning to an artistic practice was therapeutic for me and I began to wonder if there was a way to turn this newfound hobby into a commercially viable small business. About two months after making my first pots, I decided to set up shop at a farmers market called Smorgasburg which has been Flower Shrimp’s home for the last two years. Since then, we’ve become the lead florists for the Kimpton hotel in WeHo and have had our flower pots featured in many small boutiques around Los Angeles.

Has it been a smooth road?
I’ve personally struggled a lot with gaining the confidence to stand behind my work and price it appropriately. I think a lot of young artists have a hard time with that and it can be really scary to put yourself out there for public scrutiny. I’ve found a lot of joy and happiness in this business and I’m glad that I was able to confront those fears and learn to advocate for myself and my artwork.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Flower Shrimp story. Tell us more about the business.
Flower Shrimp is unique because we are truly made in LA. Every single cement pot is rendered by hand. We don’t outsource labor and we don’t compromise on quality. We also believe in building strong relationships with our vendors and our customers especially. People who come to Flower Shrimp are as likely to leave with a new friend as they are to leave with their new plant baby. We take customer service very seriously and we are most proud of that.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
As more industries navigate a post-internet world, we’re seeing a lot of traditionally brick and mortar endeavors disrupt and innovate through e-commerce. It’s going to become increasingly important for Flower Shrimp to figure out ways to meet the needs of a digitally connected market in new and inventive ways. That said, I do think that people will always find pleasure in shopping for flowers, plants, and planters at their local nurseries and floral shops. I’d love to see Flower Shrimp become a small brick and mortar shop with the capacity to ship goods via an online marketplace as well.
