Meet Harriet Hadfield of Harry Makes It Up in The Westside

Today we’d like to introduce you to Harriet Hadfield.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Harriet. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve been a working makeup artist for over 13 years, originally based in London. I moved to LA over three years ago where I now work mostly with celebrities and red carpet. I felt reflective of my own journey and how much I had struggled finding answers and support on how to grow my career.

Beyond leaving beauty school and assisting, I felt that it wasn’t ok to talk about how you negotiate fees or find clients or how you build yourself as a brand. The rise of social media had also played a huge role in my own career, and how people found my work, and I felt that was something I could help other MUAs with.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, but every bump and twist in the road has helped me grow. I struggled navigating the rise of social media at the beginning, when to be honest social media felt like a dirty word, some looked down on me for having a YouTube channel because it was still a new platform for makeup artists.

I also moved to Los Angeles three years ago and the market is very different from London because the focus of my work is much more centered around celebrity clientele, compared to London, so it felt a lot like starting again.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Harry Makes It Up – what should we know?
Ultimately I’m a makeup artist who wants to help other MUAs find their confidence and implement tools and strategies that help them grow as an artist and a business. I believe in collaboration over competition, there’s room for all of us. During cover 19, I’ve helped MUAs learn how to pivot their business to keep growing with my online Mua Courses.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Collaboration over competition.
