Today we’d like to introduce you to Portia Ford.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Portia. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
As a former track athlete, fitness was a part of my life, I literally lived and breathed fitness.
At a young age, I was introduced to the world of track and field, I didn’t know what I was getting myself into but I knew I was fast and I needed to be on the track. From the time I was in elementary school to the time I graduated high school, I ran everything from the 100 meters to cross country. Now, I wasn’t your all-world athlete, but I did receive a partial track scholarship and was off to UNLV.
After college, I didn’t go any further with track and field, I committed 13 years of my life to running and now it was over. I had to figure out what to do. How was I going to maintain this physique that I built after all these years, I couldn’t let all that hard work go down the drain. For all those reasons, I decided to start working out at the gym, I was in there at least 1-2 hours a day, five days a week and I loved it.
One day, one of the trainers came up to me and asked have I ever thought about being a personal trainer. It never crossed my mind but I thought it would be something to consider. I started to research the pros and cons of being a trainer, what it would it take to become a successful a trainer and the impact it would have by helping others with there fitness journey.
Once I gathered all the information I needed, I found it to be not only substantial for me but for others as well and that’s when I knew this was my calling and that’s why I am here today.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It was definitely some challenges! Trying to figure out how to attract my audience, where would I come up with the money to buy weights and other fitness necessities, how would I get my name out there, it was a lot to endure.
Also as a trainer, you have clients that are inconsistent, you can tell them about their health and how important is to eat right and be physically active, but sometimes it’s not enough. Personal training is not easy as it seems, especially the beginning, but once you build that rapport and trust with your client it makes everything so much easier!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the P Hunny Fitness story. Tell us more about the business.
I am still in the beginning stages of my business, I am a personal trainer but I’m still in the process of gaining more clientele.
Although I am still building my business, I am proud that I even started it! I was skeptical about it at first because I wasn’t sure if my workouts would be beneficial for my clients or could I take that leap of faith and let go was comfortable.
What sets me apart from others is that I am authentic, I am here for the people, it’s not all about the money, it’s about knowing that what I am doing is making a big impact on someone’s livelihood and their health.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I’ve had good luck and bad luck lol. I can definitely say the good has put weighed the bad, but the bad has did some damage to my business and my life as well.
Being uncomfortable has been my bad luck in all aspects of my life. I am so used to knowing I am getting paid every week to not knowing at all was scary! So, I decided to keep my 9-5 and continue with the personal training because I didn’t want to be uncomfortable.
Good luck has also been on my side as well, I took the leap of faith by becoming a trainer, knowing that I am the reason why people have gained confidence in themselves because of the way that they feel and look is such a blessing.
