Meet India Shawn

Today we’d like to introduce you to India Shawn.

India, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I grew up singing in church. My mom was the praise and worship leader for 15 yrs. I was always very shy, but I knew I had something special, and everyone around me affirmed that. I moved to Atl my 10th grade year of high school and got acquainted with the Atl music scene. I was everyone’s little sis; they actually knew me by a song I had called “Little Sister”. I eventually came together with my sister Jazmyn Michel and friends Kesia Hollins & Joshua Heart to form writing team called Full Circle. We signed to UMPG and had the opportunity to write for some amazing acts including Chris Brown, Monica, & Diddy Dirty Money. In 2012, I began my solo career with my debut album ORIGIN. I aligned with rising artists & producers and performed in every local venue in ATL. In 2015, I released a collaborative EP entitled Outer Limits with hit songwriter James Fauntleroy. In between now and then I’ve dropped a few singles, toured with Anderson. Paak, Willow Smith, and Daniel Caesar. I’ve recently signed my first major record deal with EPIC records and released 2 new singles “CALI LOVE” & “NOT TOO DEEP” feat. 6lack. An album is soon to follow!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s been a long, tough road. In hindsight, I realize that my biggest challenge was my own mindset. I let my insecurities & fear rule me for too long. I didn’t understand my value, so I settled & compromised in a lot of ways. I worked a job from the time I was 15; I was always just trying to survive, and at one point I was going to school full time, working, and recording/performing. I’m just now getting the chance to make music my sole focus.

Please tell us about your business, what you’re proud of and what sets you apart.
Music is my business. I’m a singer and songwriter. I’m known for my smoky tone, soulful sound, and ethereal aesthetic. I’m most proud of the long-lasting relationships I’ve formed along my journey. My sound and style are far reaching. My roots are in r&b, but I’ve collaborated with gospel, rap, folk, & rock artists; I believe that sets me apart from others.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I wish I had trusted myself more. If I had to start over, I would do things my way. I would do what felt good in my soul and let my ideas, vision, and personal goals guide me.
