Meet Mylah Luper-Johnson of Spique in Anaheim

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mylah Luper-Johnson.

Mylah, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
For as long as I can remember, I’ve enjoyed receiving letters and cards in the mail. My grandmother and great-aunt would write me all of the time (even though they were only an hour away). My sister would write me letters while I was off to college summer camps. My mother gave me cards for more than my birthday. She’d give me a card to say “congratulations,” “I’m pulling for you,” “hold your head up,” and “I love you.” She never forgot how much I loved to see her handwriting and feel her heart jump off the page. There has always been something about the written expression that makes me smile.

My mother always wanted to start her own greeting card company. After she passed in 2017, I decided to launch Spique the very next year in her honor. My goal is to help people build authentic relationships using the written word.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. I’ve struggled with launching. I took a year off from Spique and doubted if I should even being doing this at all. I would have negative thoughts like, “maybe I’m the only one who likes snail mail,” or “no one will want to take the time to write a message…everyone would rather text!”

But I had to cancel those thoughts and remember that someone will find value in what I do!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Spique – what should we know?
Spique is a greeting card line with simple prompts and messages on the outside and a blank interior. All of my cards are blank inside because I want the sender to use this space to harness the power of their words to address how they feel.

I’m most proud of the history of my company and the fact that my cards are relatable.

My cards are quite different from those you’ll find at the drug stores and supermarkets. They are simple in design, no illustration, and blank inside. The reason I chose simplicity is because I wanted the sender’s words to steal the show. Spique plays a supporting role.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I feel that putting God first has been the main reason for any success I’ve had. Also, I simply love what I do! I love to see people get back to writing!
