Meet Hector H. Aguilar of The Cool Kids Table Podcast in El Monte, San Gabriel Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hector H. Aguilar.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Hector. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started in January of 2019. I had previously had the idea to start a podcast for a few years but always found an excuse as to postpone or delay. As one of my goals for 2019 I said that “I was just going to go for it” in every aspect of life. I changed my perspective and started doing all the things I had been putting off.

At first, I wasn’t sure what kind of podcast I wanted to do. I had ideas but didn’t know which one to go with. The four I had in mind were; Serial Killers Podcast, Sports Podcast, Craft Beer and Whiskey Review and a Conversation Style Podcast. I went with the 4th option and I feel I made the right choice because I get to talk with a wide variety of individuals from a variety of backgrounds. That has led me to be able to have a Serial Killer episode, talk sports as well having a drink or two depending on the guest.

I wish it was an overnight sensation but the truth is hardly anything is. It’s taken a lot of work. Lots of behind the mic work that the listeners don’t often get to see. At the beginning, I had a lot of guests cancel as it was a new project and many of them didn’t see it as a serious “show”.

I’ve kept pushing and thankfully, I’ve found a small but great audience. They help spread the word and bring in more listeners.

I launched on April 23, 2019 with an initial three episodes. We just passed our one year anniversary and of this writing the show is 34 episodes deep.

For 2020 I made 20 challenges and I called it 2020 Vision, I even made an episode specifically for it and the audience is partaking in it. Challenge 1 is run 367 miles in 2020. 23 fans of the show accepted that challenge! If you want to know the other 19 challenges make sure to check us out.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been an easy project. Cancelations and rescheduling happen all the time. People are busy so I try to accommodate everyone and their schedule but there’s times when it can get discouraging when you have 2-3 people cancel last minute in a row. You have to improvise and work with what you have.

Then this year as the show starts gaining traction we have COVID-19 come in and stop everything. I took a week off to asses the situation and just started recording virtually with guests as a means to pass time. Call it luck, right place & right time but the show has grown 400% since the quarantine started. I think it’s due in large part to people trying to pass the time with something different but I’m glad they’re enjoying the show and coming back for more episodes.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with The Cool Kids Table Podcast – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
The Cool Kids Table Podcast started initially as way to get the listeners to get to join the cool conversations. We were never cool enough to sit with them in school but now we get to hear what goes on at the table. We get to hear what makes them cool, what cool people think and do. One thing I’ve learned along the way is that the Cool People don’t think they’re cool, they just do what they do, because it makes them happy. That’s pretty cool.

I am Hector H. Aguilar. I am the creator, host, editor, producer and I’m in charge of everything. From booking guests, social media to releasing on time. I made this podcast not to be about me but about the specific guest of each episode. I try and host it a bit differently because I didn’t want to do just another “Q & A interview podcast.” I try and make it just like a regular conversation between two friends while not knowing half the people that come on.

In a podcast world of celebrities having their celebrity friends on as guests, I wanted to make a show for regular people. A regular guy conversating with a regular person that you might run into at a coffee shop or buying food from a street vendor.

We all have a story, so I just try and get as many people’s story out there for the world to hear.

One thing that people tell me all the time that they love is the way I end the show. It’s not a self-help podcast but I end the show with a “Words Of Wisdom” from each guest. It’s just a quote, a story or anecdote that was talked about during the episode but it wraps up the show nicely and then if you’re from L.A. you know the verse I use. “Thanks for listening and remember if no one loves you, Hector loves you. I’ll see you next time.”

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
The future is too bright. After this pandemic, whenever that may be. I will be working towards getting a stable place to record the show as it has been a mobile podcast up until now. I’ve recorded inside and outside of libraries, in garages, at the park, breweries, coffee shops and backyards. In the last few weeks sponsors have begun reaching out to me to sponsor the show so that might be a step moving forward. If that does happen, I will have to filter what will ultimately get to sponsor the show because I don’t want to push products/services on the audience just for the sake of making a few dollars.

I will also look to video record the podcast in the near future. YouTube isn’t a big spot for us at the moment because it’s only picture of our logo to go along with the audio but I feel once we incorporate the video YouTube can potentially be huge for us.
