Meet John Torres

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Torres.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve been making music since I was 16 years old and joined my first band. Since then, it has been an amazing journey.

While getting my bachelors at UCLA, I continued performing with various bands, as well as a popular a cappella group on campus. In addition, I got involved in musical theater as an actor and singer.

Flash forward all these years, and I make my living as a songwriter principally, and also as a performing recording artist.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There’s a great meme floating around the internet which is divided into two sides. On the left side is a diagonal straight line going upward from left to right with the caption “What people think success looks like.” On the right side of the meme is a line that starts and ends exactly as on the left but in between, the line twists turns, loops, reverses course and reconfigures so many times that it looks like a scribble on the page or a set of tangled Christmas lights. My career has definitely been more like the pane on the right. 🙂

Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I would say that my business is centered around my work as a singer and songwriter. I am often most known as a vocalist, but see myself as a songwriter first, in many respects. I write in a range of genres, from pop to folk, to musical theatre, and I sing in just as many.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I believe honesty and integrity are what I value the most in my line of work. It is an industry that can really discourage you if you don’t learn to be present and just build healthy relationships. I’d add to that, that if you truly love your craft, then the big secret is that you’d be doing it for free, even if you weren’t making money.
