Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Reid.
Justin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started getting into music at a very young age. My mom would play Aaliyah’s Rock The Boat around our old apartment and I would be mesmerized. My mom said it was then that she knew that music would be in my future. I didn’t actually start singing until I joined the choir in middle school. I thrived in that environment, earning all-state honors in my first year. Near the end of middle school, I began rapping for fun but didn’t take it seriously until I got to high school. During my freshman year, I began performing locally and received a hugely positive response. Eventually, that led to me recording my first hit single, Pineapples, my senior year.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It was anything but a smooth road. As a little kid, I’ve faced abuse and child neglect. I was often bullied in school for the way I was or the way I talked. My family and I were also homeless for a few years. I had to hear my mother cry as she fought to keep hope, pushing on for me and my only brother at the time. Eventually, we moved into a home in the inner parts of Jacksonville, FL where gang violence and drug trafficking were prevalent. I’ve been through a lot, but none compares to my ongoing battle with self-doubt concerning my voice. I’ve always had sinus problems growing up and for the longest, I believed that I couldn’t sing. That my rapping voice was not appealing. Although I have learned to accept and love my voice for what it is, I will never forget the journey I took to come to this.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
Throughout my music career, I have been blessed to do many things. I have sung, rapped, played piano, acted, created record-breaking productions, and even conducted choirs in my short time in the industry. But if you ask anyone on the street, I’ll assume they will tell you I am a rapper I am most proud of the way I have been able to impact people with my music, my testimonies. Everyone in the music industry can rap or sing. I pride myself on having a vast and unorthodox skill set that is too unique to copy. That is what sets me apart from others.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I do not believe in luck. I believe in God.
