Art & Life with Peter Maffei

Today we’d like to introduce you to Peter Maffei.

Peter, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I grew up in Novato, California, a suburb of San Francisco. I have always loved music, but my real connection for it started when I was ten after my mother passed away from cancer. I started exploring my dad’s classic rock CD collection and I confided in the music, helping me get through emotionally difficult times. I started playing guitar when I was 13. I attended Marin School of the Arts in Novato, and upon graduating I started gigging and recording all over the Bay Area. I moved to LA when I was 23. I have toured North America and Europe with bands such as Sugar Candy Mountain, Pearl Charles, The Blank Tapes, Cosmo Gold, The Electric Magpie and more. My solo project is called Rooftop Gardens and I just released my first single under that moniker last month.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am currently writing and recording with two projects and I have a solo project.

I play guitar and synth in LA-based indie rock band Cosmo Gold. Our first EP “Waiting on the City” came out in Spring 2019.

I am also 1/2 of the transatlantic power pop duo Born Fighters, alongside my friend Luke Barham who lives in London. Our first single came out last year, and our second one drop this Wednesday, April 8th.

My solo project is called Rooftop Gardens. Sometimes I write songs that don’t quite fit in with any of the creative projects I am working on, so they end up coming out here. It’s a fun way to hone my craft and express myself and try new things.

Do you think conditions are generally improving for artists? What more can cities and communities do to improve conditions for artists?
Go out and find something new! There’s so much to choose from in this world, there is bound to be something that resonates with you in some way.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
I have no shows booked at the moment due to the current state of the world, but if you would like to check out any of the music I have worked on, you can follow on Spotify and Instagram and you’ll find out more there 🙂
