Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Denise Evans.
Brittany Denise, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am the inventor and founder of the patented Sparkbudz. Patented shareable earbuds that allow you to connect with your friends at the exact same time without the distractions.
I came up with the idea for Sparkbudz as a senior in high school. During our lunch break my friends and I shared music with each other. This was something we did often, but today was different.
The new Beyoncé album just dropped and we were excited to listen to all the new songs on the album. Constant distractions, short cable wires and having our earbuds fallout of our ears were something constantly dealt with. I thought to myself, “There has to be a better solution to this problem.”
After school, I shopped around looking for a solution, neither Target, Walmart, Bestbuy or Amazon had what I was looking for.
That was when the light bulb went off, “ Why not have two sets of earbuds in one, then once the user is done have it attach back into one set”.
I never considered myself as an entrepreneur, but the vision I had for Sparkbudz was so brilliant, I decided to start my new entrepreneurial journey creating these unique earbuds.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road to being an entrepreneur has not been an easy one, unfortunately in the business world it’s very competitive and being a young minority female, I was not taken as seriously as the opposite gender or race. I have faced scrutiny many times and have been verbally abused in the process by ex-friends and colleagues for taking a risk and not living by the status quo which was to go to college earn my degree and work a 9-5.
Another obstacle I faced was to get funding to get started on the product development for Sparkbudz and to also find a manufacturer for my product. I also went through several iterations to make sure the earbuds fit in the person’s ear properly.
I’ve pitched my product to several investors and angel investors, only to be turned down and rejected due to me being an early stage startup, I didn’t allow those rejections to stop me. While going through the process, I worked two jobs and saved up to help fund the beginning stages of production.
Sparkbudz – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Sparkbudz offers a unique versatility than any earbud brand in the market, the earbuds split into two separate sets while sharing, and attach back into one set when the user is not sharing. Most earbuds only have one set for one person making it hard to share your music. We also offer a unique cute accessory called Sparkpodz, which is a customizable charm that clips onto the wire of the earbuds giving the user a sense of individuality. Without having to walk around with a boring pair of earbuds.
There’s been a lot of amazing milestones I have reached since launching Sparkbudz. What I’m most proud of is having two issued patents under my belt before the age of 25.
Having a patent granted to you is definitely not easy, I worked hard at a series of odd jobs to help file both patents and my trademark. My efforts paid off when I was granted my patents on my product functionality and design including my now-patented unique zipper wiring cords.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define success by setting small goals to better your everyday life and your business accomplishing them by making daily improvements.
For me, success is about doing my job well as an entrepreneur. I want to be recognized as someone who always does her best and tries her hardest to meet my goals for my business and future endeavors.
