Meet Shea Peters of Shea’s Cakes in Santa Clarita

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shea Peters.

Shea, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Well, I began my love for baking right after high school. I got my first job at a nearby Vons working in the bakery department (Also where I met my husband), gained knowledge of different products, and realized I had a true passion for making different sweet treats like cakes and cupcakes. Not only did I realize how much I loved decorating cakes, but realized I was good at it. I soon became the bakery manager at just 19 years old and stayed working there for a few years, as I put myself through college.

I had been taking classes at Cal State Northridge, and decided to make a leap of faith ,and transitioned to culinary school. I graduated from Le Cordon Bleu with my Diploma in Baking and Pastry , got married, and then started working at different cake and cupcake shops where I just practiced my baking and decorating.

After culinary school, my most significant job was at Velvet Cupcakes in Valencia. It was there where the owner let me have creative freedom to play with flavors, and I became the manager/head cake decorator. I stayed there for a couple of years and just practiced my decorating skills.

In 2015 after finding out I was pregnant, I decided to take another leap of faith, and with the support of my hubby, I quit my job and started baking from home. I slowly gained customers by word of mouth, friends, family, and then created a yelp account and had people write about their experiences.

Five years later, I have really become a great little business, and I get to make cakes for so many wonderful families and couples. The best part is, people tend to stick with me for years which is really incredible.

Has it been a smooth road?
It’s mostly been smooth. The only issue I’ve faced has been learning to figure out the best schedule for myself and my family. I’ve had to learn to manage my business, keep up with my house, bake/decorate all my treats, have enough quality family time, all while taking care of my three year old son at home. It’s been challenging but so rewarding.

Please tell us more about your business, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
My business is Shea’s Cakes, and the company name really says it all! I specialize in custom cakes of all kinds! I make birthday, anniversary, baby shower and wedding cakes. Really anything that needs a special treat. All my cakes are made from scratch, and all use recipes I have made myself along the way. I also make cupcakes, cookies, and chocolate-covered treats.

The thing I am most proud of are my wedding cakes. I love that I get to be a part of couples special memories. I also love how beautiful wedding cakes get to be, with fresh flowers, beautiful venues, and gorgeous couples. It’s literally the best seeing everything come together.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The Baking and pastry field is forever growing and changing. There are always new ideas and new products coming out. Not sure what to expect in 10 years, but I can’t wait to be part of it!
