Today we’d like to introduce you to Zach Evans.
Zach, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started putting up YouTube videos of me playing piano way back in college. Every week I’d do a piano cover of a popular song, and slowly built an audience that way. I was getting a decent number of views on each video but wasn’t making much money from it. Then I went to an Entrepreneur meetup group and they started talking about Membership Sites. It made a lot of sense to me – people learning piano are already used to paying weekly or monthly fees for lessons, so it was just a matter of bringing that online. I made sure my course went way more in-depth than anything else out there, not just teaching the notes to songs, but really diving into the Music Theory behind the notes, as well as Technique, Ear Training, and Practice Strategies. The course got really popular and took off and that’s where I am today.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The biggest struggle for me early on was having the faith that it would work out. It took me nine months to build out the courses, set up the website, figure out how to take credit cards online, etc. And the whole time in the back of my mind, there was a little voice saying “what if you put in all this time and energy, and nobody buys your course.” So it was a lot of discipline and staying focused and trusting I had a great product and that people would want it.
Please tell us about Piano Superhuman Course.
There are a lot of online piano courses out there. Most of them just teach you how to memorize the notes of a song so that you can play it. The problem with these courses is even if you have the right notes if you don’t learn good technique you’re playing is going to be sloppy and uncoordinated, you’re going to have trouble getting hands together, and it won’t hold up under any kind of pressure in front of an audience, even family and friends. And even worse, since they’re not taught music theory, they’re stuck memorizing notes instead of understanding what’s going on with the music they’re playing. And this’ll cripple them later on if they want to do anything like improvising, composing, or arranging music. A lot of people who take my course FIRST took another course and were disillusioned when they figured out they were hitting these sticking points, and thats when they find my course. I spend a lot of time diving into the details of everything it takes to really become a solid pianist.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
It sounds cheesy, but I think the best luck was being born into a family who supported me, taught me work ethic, and gave me independence. I’ve never had a video “go viral” or a big shoutout from a celebrity or anything, so the rest was just doing the work, day in and day out.
