Today we’d like to introduce you to Tecola Robinson.
Tecola, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born and raised in the greater Los Angeles area. Although I am from sunny California, I have had my own set of personal challenges, some of which pushed me to arrive in the place that I am now, and some that have I have struggled through to arrive where I wanted to be. I believe that I always knew what I wanted to do when I grew up. I graduated high school thinking I wanted to pursue an architecture major and swiftly learned that I preferred the practical art of Interior Design. I lost both of my parents at a young age, so I had my fair shared of struggles putting myself through college, but I made it. When I landed my first job at a small boutique interior design firm seven years ago, I was elated! I learned so much, and I am so grateful for the experience I had there. However, I knew I wanted something greater for my life. My career path, and projects I’d be a part of….. I knew that I want to create opportunities for others. So here I am today, taking the road less traveled.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
This year has been the first year that I have been on my own as a business, and it has been far from smooth! I think a lot of business owners tend to have the thought that “if I build it they will come”, when in fact there is so much work and investing into your initial ideas. My greatest challenges this year have been tackling marketing and using my business savvy to create a steady flow of projects or work for myself. While I love what I do, and can achieve most interior design projects with ease. The building my business and building my business savvy has been the most challenging for me thus far. I know that I will get the hang of it sooner than later and my positive mindset will help to propel me forward when things get hard.
Please tell us about Tecola Camille Interiors.
My business in Tecola Camille Interiors. I am the solo entity that runs my company for now, but I am Interior Designer. I specialize in space planning. I’m always able to see multiple possibilities for creating function in any interior and able to provide several options that met the client’s programming needs. I’ve found peace in planning and creating these “road maps” that always lead to the best resolution and creating great foundations for the overall visual story I am trying to communicate. In addition, and what I believe sets me apart from others is that I can also layer the completed space with furniture and decor as well. I am most proud of the education that I have. College and hands on education have helped me provide great solutions to the interiors I design.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Yes! Los Angeles is the perfect city for a business like mines. Homeowners and renters alike are always looking to improve their interior spaces. For someone starting out, I’d recommend they work and learn as much as possible from those that have established their careers, determine what part of this industry you really LOVE, hone your craft, and always be willing to be a student. The beauty about Interior Design is that you can pretty much pick up and be anywhere as a designers. Great interior design is not specific to your major cities in any state, country or continent. It is truly universal!
