Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Greer.
Michelle, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Before becoming a nurse, I was a special education assistant in various local school districts. When I would read stories to the children, I noticed there was little to no representation of children with disabilities in them. So I decided I would give them the much needed platform they deserve.
The journey thus far has been an “out of body experience”. Every time I see my name on my own books I get emotional.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road has not always been smooth. In the midst of publishing my book I lost my mother to a sudden stroke. She was the only person to read my book before I met with an editor and she motivated me to get it done. It would be two years later that I actually self-published my book.
One of the biggest struggles while writing the book was communicating to my illustrator who lives in Canada. We did everything via email and Telephone.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am a children’s book author (and mental health nurse). My books will highlight children with disabilities and how they live amazing lives just like anyone else. I am most proud of providing a spotlight for children with special needs. What sets me apart from other authors is my ability to normalize disabilities.
I am courageous and passionate in the things I believe in. I will always advocate for what is right.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to go back and start over, I wouldn’t change a thing. I grew professionally and mentally in this process.
