Today we’d like to introduce you to SAB.
SAB. is an Eastern European artist based in LA.
From as early as the age of four, she started playing with colors and her love for art has only exponentially progressed since then. Having been extremely involved in art during her high school years, she decided to continue painting and got admitted to Art University. At first, it seemed like a dream — that is, until she started to feel stifled by teachers, who wanted her to concentrate mainly on classical art techniques. Her passion for Abstract Expressionism was effectively a big conflict. Growing up in a constant battle with society and its old-fashioned, conservative ideals, she decided to move abroad. August 2011 was the time for a new beginning.
This time, in the U.S.A. SAB uses her art as a medium for challenging the almost-subconsciously-ingrained impediments that are perpetuated by societal expectations. She likes to incorporate different elements to convey a story that can be subjectively interpreted by the consumer. Her art is meant to be specifically empowering for women, as she can identify with the plight, being informed by her experience as a woman herself. Heavily acrylic-based art with pastel and charcoal on canvas tends to make up a large portion of her repertoire. However, she does not limit herself to only these forms and also feeds her artistic hunger by creating apparel, furniture and murals amongst a multitude of other works. Sharing her work is a very important part of her artistic process, and she does so by showcasing her pieces in many local and international galleries and art collectives. When she’s not working on new projects, you can catch her doing pop-ups and live painting around Los Angeles.
Her upcoming show will take place in DTLA at lot 613 April 24th at 8 pm.She will be live painting “Inspiring Portraits “ .If you would like to be a part of the series this will be the perfect time.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
To achieve anything in life you have to go through the process called “struggles”. It’s a journey built with undulating and unpredictable ups and downs. You learn to get up and to push onward towards your dreams…At least this is how its been for me and it helped to get where I’m now. I come from very conservative society and finding myself is one of my biggest challenges. I don’t think my struggles stop here and I don’t want them to because that’s how I get inspired and feel alive.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I’m currently painting my “Dark World” collection along with “Inspiring Portraits”.
“Dark world” is concentrated on modern world and issues we face day to day basis. It is a story of personal experience or people in my surrounding. I hope my viewers can find pieces that are relatable and it will inspire them to make a change.
“Inspiring Portraits” is a commissioned line. I love painting portraits of people, capturing their emotional state of mind. It is called inspiring because they get to choose a phrase that describes or motivates them to be written along with the picture. It is very fun and creative process to find your true character. Since I started this idea I have received many requests and it even grew into surprises and much more.
I always share all of my process and studio time on my Instagram page @sab._theartist.
