Today we’d like to introduce you to Kellsey Schwab.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kellsey. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have always been a creative being but I really dove into my creative pool during my time at California Baptist University. When I was deciding on a major, I knew it had to be something in the creative field. I fairly quickly landed on graphic design and photography and knew straight away it was for me! I spent the next four years developing my style and taste, as well as learning the tools of the trade and how to use my talent to glorify my Lord and Savior. When I graduated, I started The Wooden Anchor Creative as a means to use my newly honed skills and have the flexibility of working freelance. Starting out, I worked with some great clients who trusted me to brand their businesses. I designed logos and websites and did website managing as well. I also photographed as often as I could. I shot weddings, family sessions, maternity, and senior sessions. I loved it all and as my skills matured, so did my business. In my personal life, I got married to my college boyfriend right after graduation and we had twin girls six years later. I loved that my business allowed me to be home as mommy and wife but also express my creative side through my business. Today, I am shooting photography more than ever and particularly love weddings! I am designing and doing a lot of web layout and managing. I can’t wait to see where The Wooden Anchor Creative goes next!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think that everyone has struggles on their road at some point. That’s is what relates us to one another, right? My struggles came in the typical manner for designers and photographers trying to start up their own businesses: where do the clients come from? How do I gain and maintain an income from this creative and frankly highly oversaturated field? How do I retain my self worth and beliefs, my brand, while trying to reach and connect with potential clients? These are struggles that get worked out through trial and error, through experience, and through leaning into the wisdom of other creatives who have done this all before. I have a solid support system who worked through these struggles with me and who spread the word about my business. Most of my clients have come by word of mouth and I am so thankful for every bit of support and for all the people who put faith in me as a creative to bring to fruition their creative dreams!
Please tell us about The Wooden Anchor Creative.
The Wooden Anchor Creative is a design and photography business. I design logos, business branding and rebranding, and websites layouts, as well as a plethora of smaller design needs. The photography side of The Wooden Anchor Creative offers family and maternity sessions, senior portraits, engagements, elopements, and weddings. I have given thought to specializing my photography towards weddings, and maybe in the future that will be the road for my business, but for now I love that I can offer sessions for everyone! As far as what sets me apart, I think my style of design is clean and minimal and can be suited for anyone’s needs. In photography, I aim to capture and produce images as I see them. I retouch the photos and then I adjust colors but stay away from anything filtered. I want the colors and contrast to pop but I want to retain the actual tones and depth of the actual subjects. My goal is to produce photos and designs that truly stand the test of time! I don’t want you to look back at your wedding photos and be able to tell they were taken in 2020. I want them to look timeless and true.
