Today we’d like to introduce you to Cori Maass.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was originally in branding and design but started doing art (pretty arbitrarily) as a creative outlet. I started to realize that it was resonating with a lot of people and was a huge part of my being that I had never fully accepted or explored. My art career itself has morphed a lot over the years, but it has been something I am really proud of and grateful for.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Definitely not! I think with business (and life) it is so important to be adaptable…even if you have to cry then take care of business. As a professional artist, the biggest challenge for me is balancing the administrative side of my career with the creative side. My creative process requires that I take a lot of time to feel, process, dream and create without restrictions. However, there is a very practical side of the job that requires me to be more logical and meet deadlines and function on the business side. It can be really exhausting at times trying to operate in both spaces.
Also, part of being an artist is being vulnerable and showing your work while you are in process and allowing people into your life. That can be hard to adapt to when you are changing and growing and you have to gauge what that means for your audience/business while staying honest with yourself.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I specialize in art and design! I have always balanced working with brands while creating for myself, so have had a lot of amazing opportunities to co-create in that space. However, I am most proud of my most recent work for my upcoming show because it is a reflection of a personal lesson that has been very impactful for me. I am working on a different scale that people haven’t seen from me yet, so I am really proud that my team and I are presenting a well-designed experience that will resonate with a lot of people. I think the ability to think and present concepts holistically is something that I am excited and grateful for and to actually see it come to life on this scale is incredible to me.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
The answer for this changes almost daily, but I am currently defining success as living a life that I am proud of. For me, that means creating things that let me leave a legacy, pushing through fear, and allowing myself to embrace joy in my life. Ultimately, I want to feel a sense of peace internally no matter the circumstances I am experiencing externally. I hope that my work/life will impact a lot more people and I will see the products of that.
