Meet Lauren Tassi

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Tassi.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As a kid, I loved to do anything creative. I was into theatre, music, dance, and crafting. I always had a million projects going on.

Sewing was a big hobby of mine growing up. I remember in middle school tearing apart my jeans and adding extra fabric to make the flares bigger. (It was the ‘90s — give me a break!)

Who would have thought, I’d be making shiny bell-bottom pants as an adult…

I first learned about fashion marketing while running my own E-commerce store. A few years ago, I launched a brand for music festival-goers. Everything was sparkly, covered in sequins and rainbows. I’d go down to the Fabric District and let the colors inspire my designs. I made kimonos, dust masks, sunglasses and more. All sewn by hand.

I ran a few ads, did some posting on social media, and had my friends spread the word. I wrote amusing product descriptions with SEO keywords. I crafted entertaining emails I knew my target customers would love.

To my surprise, I actually started getting some sales. I didn’t realize it at the time, but I was killing it at marketing my little fashion brand.

And then when summer and festival season hit, I started to get a lot of sales.

Great! Right? Not exactly…

Problem was, the business solely relied on my sewing skills. I was overwhelmed. I handmade every item I sold. The weeks leading up to Burning Man turned my apartment into a self-imposed sweatshop.

I actually had to stop marketing because I couldn’t keep up with demand. I looked into other ways to manufacture my products but there were no good options. The samples I received from overseas were laughably bad. Manufacturing in LA would have required more capital than I had.

At that time, I was also copywriting as a side hustle. I’d get small, random jobs here and there but nothing that I could live off of or turn into a business.

Here comes my lightbulb moment…

On a freelance job board, I saw a listing for a product description writer. They wanted someone who could create funny and engaging descriptions. And I thought I can do that. I’d love to do that! Plus, I had a website full of samples.

I scored that gig and the client was thrilled with the results.

That’s when I decided to go all-in on my fashion marketing business. I launched my website and started reaching out to potential clients. Things took off from there.

Now I love that I still get to be a part of this world, but I never have to worry about supply. Shipping is not my problem. Manufacturing and dealing with inventory — that’s on someone else.

I love the marketing side of fashion. Writing killer product descriptions is my jam! Crafting emails that entertain and lead the reader to take action — I’m here for it! Seeing tangible results from my work is so satisfying.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been an entirely smooth ride. But I’m grateful for every lesson I’ve learned. Every bump in the road makes me stronger and ready for what’s coming next.

I do struggle to put myself out there. I’m pretty shy. I’ve learned that the more I can authentically be myself and show up for my clients in that way — the better my work is.

I also struggle with self-doubt. (Who doesn’t?!) I’ve learned I just have to push through the imposter syndrome because it’s always going to be there.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I’m a fashion copywriter and content marketing strategist. I write product descriptions, emails, and website copy for fashion, accessory, and home brands. With juicy copy, I help my clients create a cult-like following for their brand.

I specialize in crafting extraordinary brand voices. The fashion industry is savagely competitive. Shoppers aren’t just looking for the best price anymore. They want to feel connected to a brand. One of the best ways to do that is through a brand’s voice. When you speak to your customers in a fun and relatable way you build brand loyalty.

I see a lot of brands struggle to keep their voice consistent across all platforms. If your Insta captions are sharp and sassy, but your product descriptions are boring as hell, you’re only creating confusion. Confused people don’t buy.

I’m about to hit the 1 year-mark since launching my business full-time. I’m incredibly proud of the results I’ve been able to bring to my clients.

For one client, I helped her build her activewear brand into a community. She’s not just selling leggings and bikinis — she’s encouraging young women to feel proud in their own skin. I’ve created a unique voice for her brand. Now her product launches are selling out faster than ever. It all comes back to connecting with your customers.

For another client, I write blogs chock full of valuable information. Now they have more customers coming in through organic Google searches and can spend less money on paid advertising.

My experience running my fashion brand is what sets me apart. I know about fabric, fit, cut, and design. Being able to communicate how this “creamy satin feels grazing across your skin.” Or how those “high-waisted pants will make you look taller and leaner” — is how you sell clothes online.

Pair that with a killer brand voice and you get “holy grail” status.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Stubbornness. It’s my best and worst quality! Once I start, I’m not giving up on anything. That means I’ll persevere through the self-doubt and fake some confidence when I need to.
