Today we’d like to introduce you to Shontay Lundy.
Shontay, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am originally from Upstate New York, by the way of Miami, FL-currently residing in Los Angeles. I am a woman of the sun and love to travel and being outdoors.
In 2017, I started a sunscreen company called Black Girl Sunscreen. A revolutionary sunscreen for women of color that has eliminated the tell-tale white residue, but has incorporated ingredients such as jojoba, cocoa, and avocado that moisture the skin. Black Girl Sunscreen is environmentally-friendly and has served as a staple in women’s skincare regime.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road is never-ending, as Black Girl Sunscreen has entered an untapped market. We are shifting a mindset from non-believing to believing, as well as creating a healthy debate if people of color should wear sunscreen.
For years Black people have been ignored by major sunscreen companies, and Black Girl Sunscreen is here to change that narrative. With that comes the recognition from major brands that Black people will spend their money on sunscreen. So how do we overcome the power of big/traditional brands that dominate the sun-care industry? We don’t focus on them. We work profusely to educate Black people and provide the option of other sun-care products.
Black Girl Sunscreen – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am proud of so many things. I celebrate every win but I am never surprised when something good comes we have worked so very hard for all our accomplishments. What sets Black Girl Sunscreen apart from others is that we are the culture, and are able to engage with our community in a very authentic way.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
We are proud of the community that we have built. The Black Girl Sunscreen family has supported us so much that we have landed full-time placement in Target. What does that actually mean, since sunscreen is a seasonal product typically we would only be in stores during the Spring/Summer months. But because the black buying power is so strong, our community has sold us off the shelves at Target and Target has decided to bring us back full time.
