Life and Work with Tiffany Pegula

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffany Pegula.

Tiffany, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born and raised in Los Angeles CA, specifically in a neighborhood called Baldwin Hills. I was raised by a single mom and I am the oldest of three siblings. After high school, I always wanted to be a teacher, so I attended Los Angeles Valley College. While there, I also worked as a teachers assistant at Menlo Ave. Elementary School, where my grandmother, Donna Walton, taught Special Education for 27 years. When she passed away I no longer could work there.

At that time, I decided I wanted MORE for my life. A friend of mine at the time, who was a freelance hair and makeup artist offered me the opportunity to work on set for her job since she was unavailable. The job was for Comedy Central and I had never done anything of the sort before in MY LIFE! I was so nervous because I had zero experience working on set and had no idea how I would do, but I had already decided I wanted to better my life. This was a wonderful opportunity to do so. I did such an amazing job that at the end of the day they asked me to work on set for the entire week! That is when I realized that this was something that I definitely wanted to do for a living. I had a passion for what I was doing now and that made all the difference.

Shortly after that opportunity, I was hired at a beauty supply in Sherman Oaks, CA. All the celebrities and their hair and makeup artists shopped there. After being around them I felt inspired to obtain their level of success. This beauty supply is where one of my co-workers suggested I join his beauty school in Glendale, CA. In life, you may only get a few opportunities that can truly make a difference and change the path you are on. This was one of those opportunities. I received my license from Moro Cosmetology School. I was in class with the likes of other celebrity hair and makeup artists who currently work on the following stars: Mariah Carey, Kris Jenner, Fergie, Jenny McCarthy to name a few. One of the most important things I learned while attending was you always need a strong support system if you are to be successful. That is something I still use until this day.

After beauty school, I was so fortunate to get hired at one of the top hair salons in Studio City, CA, Allen Edwards. This is where I learned the skill set which I use today. I developed and discovered my will to win and succeed. I started working there as an assistant at only 23 years of age and it is the salon where I became a celebrity hair stylist. Within a few years, I would become their top producing hairstylist. In order to become this, I flat out worked harder then my co-workers. I came in earlier then my colleagues as well as left later. On top of that, I would always come in on days others would not work. In addition, I was able to maintain the quality of work while cutting down their blow out time. I essentially learned how to “fill in the gaps”. I tried to use that time as an opportunity to grow. Nine years later, I outgrew that big salon environment and went off on my own. I now run my business out of a salon suite. It’s a double studio where my assistant and I juggle three to four clients at a time! My clients really love the private, intimate environment that we create.

In 2017, I created and launched Bleu Luna Hair, my Vegan and Organic Haircare Line. We currently sell our products online in Canada and the United States, retailing in Los Angeles, CA and most recently Las Vegas, NV! Our sales have increased 130% from last year, and we expect an even bigger number in 2020. We currently offer seven different products, with varying sizes for each product. Bleu Luna has been featured on CBS. This is LA, the sets of the Tyra Banks & Kelly Clarkson Show, as well as Savage X Fenty by Rihanna. Our products have been on tour with Jennifer Lopez and have been used on celebrities such as: Tori Spelling, Anne Winters, Brooke Burke, Zooey Deschanel, Parker McKenna Posey, Alanna Rizzo, Zoe Lister-Jones, Sammi Hanratty, Brenda Song, Rose Bertram and Mel B to name a few.

It is so amazing to have this opportunity to share my story with the world. Just a few days before I reported to Voyage I once again am taking up teaching. To add to the things I am still doing currently, I now get to share my passion for hair and education by teaching my own set of entrepreneur classes. When I think back to when I created my Instagram Handle, @hairluvbytiffany, I am reminded of my original mission statement, which was, “I wanted to serve my community, inspire and bring ‘luv’ into everything I did and touched.” I’m so proud that I have.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My advice to anyone new would be to ALWAYS continue your education. In this business in order to grow you need to have an open mind as well as an open heart. This day in age authenticity goes a long way, it speaks volumes to your future clientele. So mean what you say and say what you mean!!! I also recommend people become a part of as many groups as they can. There are so many ways to be involved in our community. It makes your clients connect with you and find you more interesting.

Please tell us about Bleu Luna Hair.
I am a celebrity hairstylist and mother of four. I specialize in colors and cuts, and I am most known for seamless blended highlights. I am proud that I have maintained a strong relationship with my clients. What sets me apart is I only work four days per week and in that week I still manage to see 40-50 clients!

Are there any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve benefited from using?
Some of my favorite Podcasts are Goal Digger and Dave Ramsey. Books that have helped me become better include: The Tipping Point by Malcom Gladwell; Crushing It! by Gary V; I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and The Four Agreements: Companion Book by Don Miguel Ruiz. I find that the most essential app for me is INSTAGRAM. It is how I market, showcase and maintain my business to this very day.
