Today we’d like to introduce you to Greg Bach.
Greg, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Creating art has been a part of me at a very young age. My initial exposure to art was cartoons and comic books. I would spend hours a day drawing my favorite characters. And while I excelled at art in school, I didn’t quite have the motivation to pursue a career in the art world. After spending a couple of years at community college, I began working full time and creating art part time. Over the years, I was still making art and showed in a few local juried shows.
By chance, I stumbled upon the VC Art Market. I had never seen anything like it before in my town — amazing artists and artisans selling their work outside in a park. I knew right there I had to be a part of it. I signed up and have been a part of the group for over four years. It’s really like a family — a great group of people that support and promote each other. I am currently showing at the VC Art Market on the second Saturday of every month.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As a gay kid growing up in suburbia, I didn’t quite have a lot of self-confidence. There were times I thought about giving up on making art. Even to this day, I experience self-doubt. Getting rejected by galleries will definitely make you second guess yourself. It’s all a learning experience, though.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
One thing that sticks out is going to LACMA on a school field trip. At the time I didn’t like going to museums. There was a German Expressionism exhibit there that I fell in love with. The dark graphic work of Egon Schiele, Käthe Kollwitz and Oskar Kokoschka continue to inspire me.
