Today we’d like to introduce you to Shannon Philip and Meike Hennon.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Shannon and Meike. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Shinebright was formed when two longtime friends came together over a shared passion, the possibility of unlocking potential. I met Meike my freshman year of college in Santa Barbara, CA.
We formed a quick friendship and remained close over the years, even traveling abroad together a few times. In 2012, we both found ourselves at a crossroads, I had just completed a Master’s in Organizational Development from Pepperdine and Meike was completing her Master’s and teaching credential from Cal State Long Beach and neither of us were clear on what our next steps would be.
I was considering entering corporate America but I began to feel disillusioned by the landscape and wondered if it was too late to really make an impact on the people I would be working with. At the same time Meike was working with freshman high school students who were barely reading at a 4th-grade level and she was also feeling disillusioned about their future possibilities for success. After sharing our concerns over several conversations we had an Aha moment. What would be possible if we take what I had studied, how to help individuals find their career passion, and bring it to the population of students Meike was working with? A spark had been ignited and we began creating workshops and coaching programs designed to help young people discover their strengths, unlock their potential and hopefully reclaim their belief in a bright future.
We spent the first few years of Shinebright working with hundreds of young people and we saw firsthand the power of self-exploration and helping them to discover their strengths. We loved working with young people, but as we progressed in our business we began to have conversation after conversation with adults who were also struggling to know their strengths and feel hopeful about their future. So, a few years ago we expanded our services to focus on anyone who is looking to make a career transition. We now work with a broad range of clients including recent college graduates, mid-level executives who are looking for more fulfillment from their work and even baby boomers looking to redefine their careers. The clients we serve has expanded but our mission has remained the same, to help people discover their strengths so they can create their best lives.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The first few years of Shinebright we mostly volunteered our time so we could pilot and perfect our workshops and coaching programs. Once we began to get paid for our work it was sporadic and inconsistent, so we both relied on side gigs and supplemental income until about three years ago when Shinebright began to take off and was able to support us both fully.
There were so many periods where we really didn’t know if Shinebright was ever going to be a sustainable business, but we continued to persevere because we saw firsthand the impact of the work we were doing and we knew there was a need for it in the world. I think the reason we survived as a business and a partnership is that Meike and I have always shared the same passion of helping more people discover their strengths so they could live their best lives. That shared vision is really what kept us going, especially through the tough years when the money wasn’t coming in and the future wasn’t clear.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Shannon – I was an only child so I loved holidays at my grandparent’s house when my whole extended family and all of my cousins would be together. My cousins and I would put on fashion shows, create haunted houses, play go fish, and watch Mr. Rogers. There was a strong sense of family, belonging and stability that permeates those memories and even now, I love any opportunity to be with my family.
Meike – My favorite memory from childhood is never wearing shoes (which is crazy because I always have shoes on now) and running around my socal neighborhood with a pack of kids during the summer. We were always outside, climbing trees, picking the neighbor’s roses, riding bikes, skateboarding and roller skating. I always had stubbed toes but refused to wear shoes because I loved the feeling of being outside.
