Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Elizabeth Wisniewski.
Dr. Elizabeth, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
As a six years old, I was diagnosed with a rare eye disease and subsequently had over 30 surgeries which diminished my visual acuity. In undergrad, I went on to pursue a double major in environmental studies and political science with a focus on environmental justice.
I had hoped to go to law school, however the Universe had different plans for me. A week after graduation, I had yet another eye surgery that did not go according to plan. I woke from anesthesia in tremendous pain. While I was trying to recover at my parents’ house, I heard a commercial for a medical message school in my hometown of Grand Rapids, Michigan and thought that may be a good way to make money during graduate school. Three weeks into the program, a deep passion and intuitive understanding of anatomy was stirred in me. I informed my father that I wanted to become a doctor of chiropractic.
I had a daunting task ahead of me. I ended up having to take all of my science classes, such a physics and anatomy, verbally. After completing a year of science classes, I enrolled in Palmer College of Chiropractic in San Jose, California. I became very involved in the profession on a state and national level and upon graduation moved down to Santa Barbara to start my first practice. As my practice expanded, I began to specialize in pregnancy and pediatric care, as well as becoming certified as a registered yoga teacher, Ayurvedic bodyworker, panchakarma technician, and energy worker. These additional modalities help to inform my vitalistic and holistic practice.
Around the time I was beginning my second practice, I felt the call to deepen my understanding of somatics, i.e., the lived experience of the body. This brought me to Pacifica Graduate Institute in Santa Barbara, where I earned a master’s degree in depth psychology with an emphasis in somatic studies. I am currently in the dissertation stage of the Ph.D., where I am researching the lived experience of cesarean section focusing through the lens of social justice, specifically obstetric violence and obstetric racism.
Has it been a smooth road?
My biggest challenge has been to come into relationship with my eye disease and except the challenges as lessons. Once I was able to come into relationship with and make meaning of my experience, that is what empowered me to continue my education so that I can be in a space of service.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
