Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Coleman.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Most people have the “I moved to LA with two bags and a dream” story. I did the same thing, BUT on top of that, I found myself in a communal living space with numerous artists sharing rooms, amenities, limited sanity. The year I stayed there I met my current roommate, my best friends I make all of my short films with, and my music partner, who is the first person I met when I moved to LA.
Please tell us about your art.
Jerry Seinfeld said that “Nothing beats a good bit”. And that’s exactly where my art and life have been pushing me. When it comes to music I’ll go from making songs about the monotony of LA life to parodying, yet respecting the SoundCloud rapper lifestyle. While I’m making a film, I question the military Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy to why is Sprite heavily marketed to the Black Community. Inspiration is the questions that pop into my mind, and the message is my answer to said questions.
As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
If I want to listen or watch what I do without any reservation, I know I succeeded in making what I set out to create. The most essential quality an artist needs is humility when you’re collaborating and something makes your work ultimately better, even if it isn’t your idea, I feel it’s necessary to lean into that.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
Right now I’m about to roll out a mixtape project paired with a couple of music videos within the next coming weeks. You can find that under the name of tamagotchee boys (lawsuits are expensive, so I altered the name). It’ll be on all streaming platforms, YouTube, and Instagram. You can support my work by taking the time to watch what I make or giving my songs a listen or two or two thousand times. Additionally, you if you’re feeling generous or particularly philanthropic, you can venmo me @d8-mike to help fund my next project or cup of coffee.
