Meet MacKenzie McClain Hill of LumiBloom

Today we’d like to introduce you to MacKenzie McClain Hill.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Like so many entrepreneurs, my business was inspired by my interests and passions. I love fashion, beauty, and wellness.

I am a hair girl, and I love constantly changing my look, from the color to the length and the style. Hair in my view is the ultimate accessory. Also being an athlete, I am very much aware of what I put in my body and the other things that I have to do to accommodate an extremely active lifestyle. As a woman, I am sensitive to the impact of both how look and how I feel on my overall performance and ability to do what I do in the world. Paying attention to both have empowered me to feel confident about myself and reach for the stars. So, when I thought about what I would do after track and field building a company around beauty and wellness seemed obvious. Especially since I knew I wanted to be my own boss and to be in a position to impact other women and girls. LumiBloom is more than just a beauty and wellness company it’s a lifestyle brand meant to inspire confidence in others and allow them space to redefine beauty in a way that speaks to them.

Once I was clear about what I wanted to do, everything else fell into place. I started identifying high-quality products, securing funds, recruiting my team to assist in bringing my vision to life, and buckled down and went for it.

I got to where I am today through resilience, hard work, determination, trial and error, a strong team, and paying attention to the market. When starting a business not every decision will be right, and not every idea will pan out. However, being clear about the goal and being willing to pivot are important to success. One of my favorite books that helped me to stay on track is “The One Thing” by Gary Keller. Anytime I felt scattered or anxious it helped put everything into perspective for me.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
One of the biggest struggles I encountered was assembling the right team. And I say right vs strong because there is a right and wrong fit. Your team members need to be people you trust that see your vision, who are dedicated to executing your plan and are capable of getting it done. Our most significant setback occurred after I had put together a first-class creative and digital marketing team led by a uniquely talented industry professional, Marci Ickler. I can’t overstate how strong she was or how excited I was to have secured her talent and leadership in such a critically important area. Not long after solidifying the overall marketing strategy and creative direction, there was a tragic accident off the coast of Mexico resulting in her death. Marci was not only a colleague but a friend who had been critical to my business evolution and plan for growth. Losing her easily set LumiBloom back 12-15 months. That was a real and almost inconceivable gut punch, both personally and professionally. and a time when I had to take a step back regroup and step up to the challenge of starting over to feel an important void.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the LumiBloom story. Tell us more about the business.
I am a 21st Century entrepreneur building a beauty and wellness e-commerce business and lifestyle brand all the while chasing a spot on the 2020 US Olympic team. I embrace the challenge of running a business and competing in the 100m hurdles as an elite track and field athlete with enthusiasm and rigor.

At LumiBloom, my team and I strive to be a market standout whose ownership and leadership reflect the aspirations, uniqueness, and strength of its customers, phenomenal women from all walks of life. We believe that beauty begins on the inside, that feeling good inspires confidence and that with confidence you can do anything. We’re not just building a company we’re powering a movement that encourages others to achieve their dreams and live their best lives.

My company is woman-owned and operated and produces, markets and provide products with women’s needs in mind. We prioritize women’s health and wellness. However, LumiBloom is more than a brand, we are building a platform to connect with and inspire other women, and to share and magnify their stories.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
There is an old saying “Its better to be Lucky than Smart”. While I believe that is true, I am still waiting for my lucky break, as an entrepreneur. In the meantime, it’s been a lot of preparation meeting opportunity that has been responsible for the things that have propelled me forward. If I had to point to one thing that was outside of my control that has played a significant role in my life, it would be attending Long Beach Wilson Highschool at a time when they had one of the best highschool girls’ track coaches and arguable the girls’ best track team in the country! As a first time track and field athlete that stroke of luck was essential to my becoming a State Champion, Blue Chip College Recruit, and Olympic Hopeful.
