Today we’d like to introduce you to Jocelyn Bishop.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I had big dreams at a young age. Not everyone knows I was raised as an only child in a single-parent household. I spent a lot of time alone because my mother worked a lot. But there was always a computer around. Curious, bored, and angsty – I would sit on the computer for hours, teaching myself CSS and HTML coding, selling crafts on an ETSY shop, and making the COOLEST custom Myspace, Neopets, and Tumblr themes ever. I loved everything Internet, and I began freelance digital marketing before I knew I could make it a full-time job. I started off using my skills in graphic design and social media to help around my community.
As a hobby, I provide freelance graphic design services to family members, churches, and local businesses. I saw this as a win-win because it allowed me to provide a service I love while bulking up my portfolio. In high school, I had the opportunity to take college classes early and work internships, where I gained experience in marketing and graphic design programs like Adobe Illustrator and Adobe In-design. I quickly fell in love with the feeling of executing beautiful campaigns and seeing them come to life. There was just something about Marketing that keeps my inner child inspired and hopeful. Now, I take on clients for Digital Marketing with a focus on Social Media and work full time as an in-house Social Media Marketing Specialist. I get to put my hands on everything I love: Graphic design, Copywriting, Influencers, and ambassador Management, and my absolute favorite- Conceptualizingimpressive campaigns.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Most people are aware that as a single parent, putting a child through college on your own is nearly impossible. Our financial situation has held me back from applying to as many colleges as I would have liked in my senior year because of the cost of application fees. However, out of the colleges, I was able to apply to, everyone accepted.
My passion for education motivated me to participate in college-prep programs that would encourage underprivileged kids like me to apply to scholarships after school (instead of hanging getting into all kinds of trouble while we wait for our rides). Because of the program, I applied for and thankfully later receive Coca Cola’s First Generation 4-year College Scholarship. I still remember the day I got the letter from the scholarship team. It was a personal statement writing contest, and I wrote about growing up an only child when my mother was battling drug addiction. I like to think I was blessed with the scholarship through her recovery. Although the road hasn’t been easy, I’m learning to focus on what pushes me forward and makes me happy. Ultimately, that’s working my hardest every day building my business and the businesses of others by being who I am to my core- a creative.
We’d love to hear more about your business.

Working for several corporate marketing teams has been an enjoyable learning experience that has and has strengthened my knowledge of what it takes to manage success.
What were you like growing up?
Watching my mother go through obstacles as a single parent greatly influenced my choice to go to college. She had juggle raising me alone, overcoming drug addiction, working full time all at once, alone. She never completed a college degree because she decided to work in order to support her family. I know that she has other dreams that were not realized because of her decision to quit school. I know my goals, my passion, and I know that going to a great college is the way I’m going to achieve them. I watched as my mother used me and her faith as motivation to go back to college, move higher in her job position, and keep up a loving environment at home. As a result, I became increasingly involved in church and the community.
My heart went out especially to the homeless, and those struggling with drugs whilst trying their best to raise a family. On my commute to school, I would see groups of people outside of shelters, most of them women accompanied by their toddlers. Being an active member of my community youth group has allowed me to make a lasting impact on the homeless in San Diego. Over the course of two months, I presented and organized a campaign entitled, “Hygiene for the Homeless”. This project raised hundreds of personal hygiene items for the less fortunate. Each and every smile assured me that volunteering a few hours of my time really meant a lot to those people. I guess that would count as my first campaign ever.
