Meet Rebecca Carter of Rebecca Torres Jewelry in Downtown Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Carter.

Rebecca, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve been entrepreneurial-minded since I was a little girl and started making and selling jewelry to family and friends when I was 12 years old. Every weekend my best friends and I would go to the local bead shop to spend all of our weekly allowances on jewelry supplies. We’d sit for hours after school in a circle on the floor at one of our houses and make jewelry. I first had the idea to sell my creations when my aunt hosted a Christmas party at her house and I displayed my jewelry on her dining room table. I ended up making $500 that night! It was the most money I had ever seen at that point in my life and I was so excited. Even at a young age, I realized how special it was to create something with my own two hands and see it bring joy to others.

I continued to make and sell jewelry until high school and took a break in college to focus on school and to explore my other interests. After graduating from college I was curious about SO many industries and held positions in PR, marketing, as a personal assistant, and in reality television casting (I have some crazy stories!) I’m grateful for every job I’ve had and have gained tons of insight from each industry, however my love of jewelry was unwavering. In 2017, I officially launched Rebecca Torres Jewelry LLC and haven’t looked back since.

Has it been a smooth road?
My journey has had so many ups and downs it’s not even funny! From confusion about what I wanted to do with my life to self-doubt to countless missteps, I’ve had my fair share of struggles. When I started my business, I didn’t know anyone on a similar path and didn’t have anyone to ask questions or bounce ideas off of. Part of me didn’t even know if it was possible to make a living selling my jewelry because I didn’t know anyone personally who had found success doing something similar. Thankfully I’ve met lots of super inspiring business owners over the past three years who have been extremely encouraging and have expanded my mindset. Despite the struggles, I’ve learned to embrace failure and use it as a learning experience and to help me pivot towards successes.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Rebecca Torres Jewelry – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I design, manufacture, and hand-make 14k gold, gold-filled, semi-precious stone, and sterling silver jewelry. All of my supplies and materials are sourced in Downtown LA and I work with local artisans to create unique, dainty jewelry. Some of my most popular pieces include multi-strand necklaces, hoops with dangling charms, and the personalized area code necklace. The number one goal with my jewelry has always been to encourage and inspire confidence and individuality in the wearer.

In terms of what I’m most proud of, it’s definitely the fact that I had the courage to take the road less traveled. To start a business from scratch and to have absolutely no idea what I was doing to slowly learning along the way and building my confidence is something that I’ll always pat myself on the back for.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I was born and raised in South Pasadena and went to college in LA, so it’s safe to say I’m in love with this city and don’t plan on living anywhere else. When I travel I’m always so grateful that I get to come home to such a beautiful place. What I love most about LA is its diversity and the people here. There is no shortage of incredibly creative and inspiring individuals who embrace their authenticity and who are unapologetically themselves. This is a city that lets you live your truth!

I’d say the thing I like least about our city is the traffic and how long it takes to get from the east side to the west side and vice versa!
