Today we’d like to introduce you to Henry MacLean.
Henry, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Me and my musical partner Dylan Grossman started making music under the name Maryanne Bold in 2017 when I was finishing school at Emerson College. We made one song that people responded to… that gave us energy to keep creating!
We are inspired by pop music and pop production mostly, and our attitude has always been toward feel-good productions. My favorite pop songs have an infectious, feel-good energy that makes me crank up the volume in my Toyota Camry; Dylan and I aim to replicate that feeling.
Has it been a smooth road?
We make a lot of music videos for our songs, which is a rewarding process. Videos also take a decent amount of resources. We are so grateful to those who have been part of it with us and who have helped make it possible. Like the songs themselves, it takes a lot of coordinating and scheduling which is always difficult.
The other challenge is promoting ourselves on social media in a way that feels authentic. We are so grateful for the people who listen and respond positively to what we make! But I do struggle with the constant promotion and posting that needs to be done nowadays in such a competitive creative field. Our listener pool is still very small, so it is always a struggle to try and reach a wider audience, but we keep at it!
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I specialize in vocals and Dylan specializes in production. I am proud of my ability to sing openly and honestly, but also to promote positivity and love through the music. I think it’s important to have optimism woven into the message or even the general feeling of a song… I believe that’s why people love listening to pop music.
I do also believe our visual aesthetic and stream of videos that accompany our songs give us an identity that separates us from other artists within a similar genre.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Everything is moving over to streaming. The business is changing, but I do think that the digital platforms have such a hold on us that they will continue to define trends that permeate the music industry, and how people listen.
