Today we’d like to introduce you to Ruby Vo.
Ruby, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
Throughout high school, I was planning on going to college to pursue a career in nursing. A year into college, I wasn’t happy and was having a hard time staying motivated. I was talking to my brother one day and he knew I wasn’t enjoying school and that nursing wasn’t what I wanted to do. He told me to think about what I love to do and if I can make it into a career. I thought about it and at the time, I was obsessed with makeup. Makeup consumed my life, I would watch youtube videos about makeup all day and I would spend all my money on makeup. After a little bit of research, I knew I wanted to be a makeup artist. So I looked up some schools in Los Angeles and I was interested in attending Makeup Designory in Burbank. In May 2017, I moved to Los Angeles to start school in September. I finished my program in January 2018 and it was the best decision I’ve ever made. The year after graduating makeup school was the hardest year for me. I was struggling to find work, but I took any makeup job I could. I would email production companies, photographers, influencers, celebrity makeup artists to assist and even take random makeup jobs off craigslist. I just wanted to do makeup and be in that environment to gain any experience that I could get. A couple of months after graduating, I knew I wanted to do more celebrity work rather than film/tv. So throughout 2018, I emailed every beauty agency and makeup artist in Los Angeles and New York, because I knew I would need the experience of assisting celebrity makeup artists. By the end of 2018, I got an email back from one of the artists I emailed, Allan Avendano. Ever since then, I’ve been assisting him and I have been with him for about a year now. When I have time, I do take jobs on my own. I still have so much to learn and so many goals to accomplish, but I am happier than I have ever been.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am a makeup artist in Los Angeles. I can do everything from natural makeup, smokey eyes, bronze and glowy, red carpet, editorial and the list goes on. One of my favorite looks to do is a natural glowy skin and to just enhance my clients’ natural features, but at the same time, I absolutely love playing with color and doing a colorful eye look or maybe a bold lip. Makeup is so versatile, I just love to have fun with it and being creative. My goal is for my clients to feel beautiful and confident.
What would you recommend to an artist new to the city, or to art, in terms of meeting and connecting with other artists and creatives?
Instagram is an amazing tool that helps connect with so many people. Instagram actually help me find my current job. At the moment, I am assisting makeup artist Allan Avendano, I found him off of Instagram and I emailed him about assisting. Before assisting Allan, I emailed every agency and makeup artist in Los Angeles and New York about assisting. Instagram really helped me connect with so many people in the industry.
