Meet Ryan McComb of McComb Orthodontics in Culver City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan McComb.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I grew up in South Florida before heading to Emory University for undergraduate studies in Spanish Literature. I then attended the University of Pennsylvania where I did research in education. After graduating from Harvard University for dental school, I moved out to LA to complete my residency in orthodontics. I’ve always had a desire to be an entrepreneur along with being an orthodontist, so the process of starting a business has been really exciting. My goal is to provide a completely unique experience when it comes to orthodontics, and I’m sure the practice will continue to evolve as time goes on. What I’ve found so far is that our desire to embrace the community and offer unparalleled service has proven to be really valuable in building a practice.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Overall, it’s been an amazing journey. I knew I wanted to open my own office before completing residency. It took a long time (over 2 years) to find the right space, but we’re so happy we landed in Culver City. It’s such an amazing community with amazing schools, great companies, and a vibrant commercial life. We’ve received a really warm welcome from the community. The hardest (and best) problem we’ve had to cope with is keeping up with such rapid growth. It’s been a great challenge, and thanks to the amazing team working with us, it’s been a pretty stress-free journey.

I think one of the biggest reasons for our early success was a strong marketing plan and a great group of businesses helping us with our initial planning.

McComb Orthodontics – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We opened the doors to our first practice in December 2015. Since that time, we’ve grown to be one of the busiest practices on the Westside. One of my primary goals with the practice was to give patients a healthcare experience different from anything they’ve experienced before. I also wanted our primary marketing initiatives to be community-focused and philanthropic. Since opening, we’ve donated to over 15 schools and community groups and regularly accept pro-bono cases for patients in need.

Our practice philosophy is that orthodontics should be fun, easy, and stress free. If patients don’t feel that from the moment they walk in our door, then I don’t think we’ve done a good job. We regularly hear from people that visiting the office is one of the highlights of their day.

Our treatment approach is both functional and esthetic. Since most people in LA are looking for the most discreet options available, we specialize in lingual (behind the teeth) braces, Invisalign and clear braces. We also treat a lot of children, beginning around age 7, to help facilitate tooth eruption and facial development.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success for me is most definitely not defined by the overall profitability of a business. Instead, it’s defined by the sum of all things in life that bring you happiness. If I had only a successful business but didn’t enjoy my life away from it, I wouldn’t consider that successful. Anytime I teach residents or speak with visiting orthodontists, I credit a lot of my practices success with this philosophy. I’m always sure to balance my strong work ethic with time away from the office with family and friends. Travel and adventure are a big part of my life. I spend almost every other weekend exploring a new city or trying something new in LA. So for me, success is a well-balanced life with a successful business to go along with it 🙂

I wish you and your practice nothing but success in the future. Continue to live your life in, on and away from your practice with equal amounts of effort and excitement and you will never look back with any regrets. I know your brother and parents are very proud of you, I have to hear about it every time I talk to them. 🙂
    All by best,
    Scott
