Today we’d like to introduce you to WestCoast Keish.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I got my start in media when I created my first personal blog, WestCoastKeish.com as a creative outlet. Although it started off as a personal blog, featuring my thoughts and other random musings, it wasn’t too soon before artists started sending me music and I pivoted to being a Hip Hop blogger.
From there, I would intern at RESPECT Magazine while I was in college finishing up my Marketing degree. During the last few months of my college years, I had the idea to start a new music blog, Hype Off Life. So, I started building the infrastructure during my spare time in-between papers, group projects and required reading. I was so amped to get things started that I went to the library to work on Hype Off Life the same day I graduated.
Things really took off after that, as I was able to focus on my passion full-time. Since then, we’ve secured interviews and features with established artists like Mike Jones, YFN Lucci and B-Real, plus and a lot of upcoming talent like Inayah Lamis and Steven G. We have also been recognized as a Top 10 Hip Hop Magazine and Top 100 Hip Hop blog.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not! My main struggle has been finding balance between work, raising a family, and still having time for myself at the end of the day.
Please tell us about Hype Off Life.
Hype Off Life is a Hip Hop magazine that focuses on the positive side of the culture. From featuring rappers and singers to entrepreneurs and other creatives, we share our platform with those that aren’t getting the recognition they deserve, regardless of likes, followers and other crazy metrics that don’t define talent. We are known for bringing fresh talent to the forefront.
I’m most proud of the positive impact Hype Off Life is making, giving artists props and inspiring them to keep going. What sets us apart from others is that we are strictly about showcasing talent, not gossip, hearsay or click-baiting for page views. We firmly believe in the mantra, “if you don’t have anything good to say, don’t say nothing at all”. Hype Off Life is here for the culture, showing love always.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
My optimism is most important to my success. Without it, I would have given up a long time ago.
