Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela “Mecca” Redmon.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve spent years in a thriving sales career building a legacy through various business channels. My career launched at age 17 as a professional singer collaborating with the internationally known hip-hop recording artist Jay Z. My work featured on Jay Z’s debut album Reasonable Doubt with the release of his fourth single “Feelin it.” Although in hind-sight my feature was a great accomplishment, my life’s journey didn’t stop with music. One of the most invigorating work experiences I have had was working as a professional matchmaker for one of the largest matchmaking firms here in Atlanta Georgia, Single Atlanta. I’ve worked with some of the best employers, but still I wasn’t fulfilling my purpose. I enjoy spending time with family and friends cooking, baking, coming together to share our stories and experiences. Baking has always been a major part of my life. My mother has been baking since 1963 using recipes that were passed down to her from her great-grandmother.
As a child, I would have my mother’s homemade cake for all occasions including birthdays and holidays. My favorite cake was her famous red velvet cake. Being left with an overwhelming need to try my hand at something that is both challenging and fulfilling, I decided to breathe life into my ultimate passion project with the creation of an online bakery named after my mother AnnaBae. I resolved to partner with my mom to bring her wonderful recipes to the forefront and to seize an opportunity to share with others our family tradition that has brought us so much joy and warm feelings. With the launch of AnnaBae bakery, I have single-handedly created the grand opportunity to partner not only with my mother but also with my husband and our three beautiful children. Now I can finally say that I am truly living out my dreams.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It took me some time to turn a hobby into a legitimate business because I found a sense of comfort and safety with in my sales career, so much so that I have had years of anxiety stored away that kept me from stepping out and exploring entrepreneurship. As CEO of AnnaBae Bakery, I have had the amazing opportunity to travel and build solid relationships with female entrepreneurs all over the world. I’ve found a common thread with women across the globe. Many of us experience fear and anxiety that recycles every year and I believe that the comfort of knowing exactly what our paychecks are prevents us from reaching our fullest potential and capabilities.
As a result of my own journey, I have learned that as women we have the power to impact the world by nurturing and developing businesses that operate with great intention and purpose. One of my primary goals with AnnaBae Bakery is to inspire women who are just like me. Women who struggle with what I like to call the “comfort zone syndrome.’’ As I share my own story through public speaking my agenda is to spread the good news of knowing that it is perfectly okay to have these feelings of anxiety and self-doubt. It is paramount that we push past those comfort zones in order to realign our entrepreneurial goals.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the AnnaBae Bakery story. Tell us more about the business.
Our cakes are made to resonate with a specific time in history when our grandmothers put their love, time, and energy into homemade baking. That unique taste of grandma’s cakes left a lasting impression on our lives and the biggest inspiration was in the cakes because the recipes will always stand the test of time. Without “fluff” AnnaBae’s baking methods are simply heartfelt. Her favorite sentiment to recite is “I pray and then I bake.” She takes great pride in prepping and baking a wide range of cake flavors from scratch to maintain the same taste that hit her taste buds in 1963. The goal with AnnaBae’s cakes is to give others that same feeling of love and comfort that I experienced throughout childhood.
We offer a variety of flavor options to our customers from our famous strawberry cake which remains in constant competition with our popular red velvet cake. AnnaBae’s yummy key-lime cake is a mouthwatering taste buster too. Oh, and did I mention our carrot cake or our cakes in a jar? Cakes in a jar is a delicious convenient cake that fills an 8-ounce glass mason jar. My favorite item is our signature hunk of cake. It’s a huge slice of delectable cake just enough for two people to share satisfying each individual taste palate.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
God favors us. He shows us approval and kindness in blessing us with good things that we do not deserve and could never earn. I operate off God’s grace and mercy not luck.
