Today we’d like to introduce you to Jovany Jimenez.
Jovany, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My first memory in technology is early in high-school when my dad gifted me a computer on my 13th birthday. I was hooked on ENCARTA Encyclopedia and early gaming sites on the internet. My parents quickly noticed I had an insatiable curiosity. I also spent many weeks with my aunt and uncle on the public library searching for why’s, why is the sky blue, why is the moon round and why do airplanes fly?
After school, I joined the engineering club at University of Florida, and year later I became an Aerospace Engineer. My first job was at Boeing Phantom Works. I created stealth design for NAVY airships. Then, I got an offer to move to Los Angeles, CA and work for Northrop Grumman. I spent three years developing drone technology, and achieved a NAVAL Aviation History award, for work among the X-37b autonomous air refueling.
I continued my education in Caltech (Program Management), Stanford (Aerospace Engineering) and finally UCLA (Master in Business Administration).
I am now the program manager of three government technology programs, I serve in the board of two technology companies, and I am the founder of Dronesurf, a drone service provider company.
Has it been a smooth road?
During the recession, I was laid off my aerospace job. I only had enough savings for three months of rent, and I had to re-invent myself. I used the funds to open a restaurant on Hollywood Blvd, named Cafe Audrey ( in memory of Actress Audrey Hepburn “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”). The Cafe did well for two years and allowed me to get back on my feet, and pursue my MBA.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Dronesurf – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Dronesurf was founded in 2015 as a drone service provider. Since then, we have specialized in TV and Film Aerial Cinematography. Recently, our footage was included in Golden Globe nominee series ” Who is America?” from Showtime. We are different than your average drone company in many ways: we know aerospace, we know film and we know good flying.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Los Angeles is the city of dreams. The city is full of diversity, success stories, and life. This city has broken my bones and has built me up over and over again. Yet, I am grateful to be part of this megalopolis, a poetry to a modern utopia. I wish I spent less time trapped in traffic, and more time being with friends. Also, I wish the air quality was a little better for my asthma.
