Today we’d like to introduce you to Max Chang.
Max, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Throughout my young adulthood years, I struggled a lot with anxiety and putting myself out in the community. As an Asian American, I expected myself to achieve certain perfect standards, immediately. These unrealistic expectations of myself ultimately paralyzed and inhibited me from taking the first step. As I grew older, I realized my desire for perfection stopped me from giving my best effort. I was so concerned with the “what if’s” of failing, that I never even had a chance to really see it happen. (Heck, I even worried momentarily for including the word ‘failure’ in my title, in fears that it would daunt indifferent pod- listeners.)
It’s time to stop making excuses and do it.
About the Podcast: In the entertainment industry, we always talk about results- who sold how many albums, who booked what show, and who lost how many pounds for which runway, but we never talk about the most grueling failures they had to face to get there.
This podcast focuses not on the successes, but on the failures– and what those failures mean for a now, emerging artist.
Whether you’re aiming to be the next Kim Petras, Nyles DiMarco, Chella Man or the next Keilani, this podcast shines a light on stories from ambitious, queer artists just like you.
Featuring an expansive category of entertainment trades, each episode shines a light on a different industry including make-up, cinematography, dance, photography, acting, drag performance, and much more.
As queer people, succeeding is an anomaly, and failure is all too commonplace. The double-edge sword that is social media highlights the many advances of our community’s work, but it often fails to acknowledge the hardship behind every beaming Instagram upload. It has been statistically proven that social media impacts negatively on the mental health and perception of self-esteem for many young individuals, especially the marginalized LGBTQIA+ community. The podcast seeks to normalize failure, and say: it’s okay to fall, but how do we get back up!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been smooth sailing at all, booking talent has been difficult, but its a great learning process. I enjoy it so much, so even though it wasn’t all smooth sailing it has been very enjoyable, and when we get to book a talent and actually speak with them, it’s very fulfilling.
Please tell us more about your work.
We’re a podcast that speaks on normalizing failure, too often in the entertainment industry do we only highlight accolades. This creates a false sense of perfectionism that plagues our generation. This podcast seeks to interview successful people and talk not about success but rather failure, to shine a light on the fact that everyone fails at some point in their life. This podcast is candid, it’s honest, it’s messy, it’s emotional, and it doesn’t fit into a box or label perfectly.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, I would ask more questions and ask for more help from people who have more experience, because I built this from the ground up all on my own. We are still starting out, but its a great trajectory, and I’m excited to see where it goes.
