Today we’d like to introduce you to Davide Micciulla.
Davide, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’m a filmmaker from Siracusa, Sicily, but I had a unique start to my filmmaking career. As a child, I dreamt of a life of discovery through archaeology. I was specifically fascinated by Egypt and its rich history.
This childhood aspiration resulted in a deep interest in photography. My passion enveloped me so much so that my father called it, “A second skin.” Once captivated by the art of imagery, I set my sights on investing in a camera. I saved up money and, as soon as I was able to, purchased my first real camera. It was my greatest companion on many adventures as I grew up.
At 18, I decided to leave my beloved hometown and my family for Milan, where I began studying Art Direction at Naba. It was in this program that I discovered a new medium – one that encapsulated all of my desires. Video Making allowed me to express myself through living images.
I honed my craft and began my collaborative career with fashion designers and agencies before eventually becoming an official video contributor for Elle Italia. My work has even allowed me to travel to Egypt and explore the world that drove me towards this destiny.
Still, I commit my time and energy to learn more, maintaining my focus and enthusiasm throughout my professional journey with an unmatched thirst for knowledge and experience.
Within a few years, I have been able to truly immerse myself in the fashion industry – signing contracts with international companies such as H&M, Shiseido, and Samsung.
My videos have been aired on national TV channels like Mediaset and Rai.
A little while ago, while working on the first of many projects with Booking.com, I discovered Los Angeles. I found more creativity in LA than ever before and developed an even greater desire to share my art. I decided to work towards getting a Job Visa, and thankfully, I got it. Now that I’m living here, I’m determined to improve myself and my work through new experiences – holding my family in my heart, always.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I think that with everything in life, it’s not always a smooth road. You have to work hard and fight to get what you want, and I believe that that’s more rewarding than achieving everything without a struggle.
The start of my career was challenging – the fashion industry is littered with false personalities and people eager to use. I thought that the people I met truly believed in me and wanted to help, but unfortunately, they were just trying to climb over me to get somewhere higher. It helped me grow up, change my vision, and find legitimate allies that believed in my talent.
Now, in Los Angeles, it’s like starting from scratch. I’m finding new allies and creating connections, but this time I know what to look for – I’m more ready than before.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I’m a Video Director.
My job is to create video content throughout different industries, but most people know my work in fashion because it’s where I started and where most of my work is right now.
I feel lucky all the time because I love my job, so it doesn’t feel like I’ve worked a day in my life. I love creating; I love to show my point of view – the world through my eyes. As I expand my experience, I’ve taken on video projects in the travel industry. It’s amazing to share what I learn about different cultures in new places around the world.
With the millennial era, I’m working more on my social media content too, especially Instagram. Sometimes I take on projects that are solely for social media.
My big dream? Expand into creating video content for the music industry. It would be amazing to direct a music video!
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I always thought I was unusually lucky. I lost my wallet at least four times (sometimes with a significant amount of money inside), and I always had it returned with everything inside, one way or another.
Unfortunately, in life, something can happen that changes everything else drastically. It may even be something that you consider one of the most unlucky things in the world, but like anything else, it helps you in some way. My mum teaches me to always believe in myself and what I do, no matter what has happened.
I changed my life, and I’m living on the opposite side of the world. I want to continue to believe in what I’m doing, so I think the best advice I can give is – persevere.
